Overview
Holman is a family-owned, global automotive services organization. Holman serves markets including fleet management and leasing; vehicle fabrication and upfitting; component manufacturing and productivity solutions; powertrain distribution and logistics services; commercial and personal insurance and risk management; and retail automotive sales as one of the largest privately owned dealership groups in the United States. Holman is seeking a Director, Central Accounting to lead a core accounting shared services function at the center of our retail accounting organization. This role offers the opportunity to build on an existing foundation, shape the next phase of a growing function, and strengthen the operating model through automation, process improvement, and team capability development. The Director will oversee key transactional accounting processes, ensuring accuracy, timeliness, consistency, and strong internal controls, while driving a service-oriented function that supports the broader accounting organization.
Responsibilities
Run standardized processing at scale (shared-services engine)
Lead Central Accounting as a shared services organization to ensure accurate, timely processing across core transaction streams: receivable payments, inventory purchases, deal billing (vehicle/aftermarket sales), vendor invoices, and vendor payments
Define, implement, and continuously improve service level agreements (SLAs) and operating metrics (accuracy/on-time, cycle time, backlog aging, rework/defect rates, customer responsiveness); provide routine performance reporting and transparency to stakeholders
Build and maintain standard work across Central Accounting (templates, checklists, cutoffs, documentation standards, quality controls) to reduce variability, enable consistent handoffs with Dealership Accounting and Corporate Accounting
Intake and workflow management with SLAs, visibility, and escalation
Design and operate a centralized intake and workflow management model (queue-based work, prioritization rules, escalation paths) for predictable throughput and clear ownership of work in flight
Controls-by-design and audit readiness embedded in processes
Ensure compliance with applicable accounting principles, regulations, and standards (e.g., GAAP, tax laws)
Oversee audits and internal controls to maintain financial integrity and prevent fraud; design controls to prevent defects
Maintain strong partnership with IT Security to ensure PCI compliance and related retail payment controls
Systems and data discipline (reporting readiness and scalable operations)
Own system configuration and interfaces: GL account additions, schedule setups, access controls, and operational readiness tied to systems and data
Maintain partnerships tied to transaction processing performance (e.g., merchant processor/terminal management; DMS relationships)
Continuous improvement, automation, and enhancements to the operation
Collaborate with business partners to prioritize and deliver new capabilities and optimize existing ones
Identify and implement best practices and technological advancements to scale capacity and reliability
People leadership, talent development, and capacity management
Directly manage multiple accounting managers; coach supervisors and team members; foster a collaborative environment
Own talent management for central accounting: attract, develop, retain talent; set clear expectations and measurable outcomes
Own the Central Accounting operating cadence (daily/weekly/monthly), including period-end cutoffs, readiness checks, workload planning, and escalation routines for a predictable close
Cross-functional partnership and enablement with Operations, Dealership Accounting leaders, and Accounting Operations to support cohesive practices
Perform all other duties and special projects as assigned
Education and Training
Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business or related field required; Master’s preferred
Proficient in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Project, Visio, SharePoint, etc.)
Relevant Work Experience
10+ years’ experience, including 5+ years in a leadership role; multi-level reporting experience strongly preferred
Experience managing high-volume transactional accounting teams
Shared services experience (3+ years) with demonstrated ability to build SLAs/KPIs, standard work, and scalable processes
Automotive/dealership accounting familiarity is a plus
