Job Description
The vice president/principal investor level at Intuitive Ventures plays a crucial leadership role in driving the investment process, managing a portfolio of investments, and contributing to the firm’s strategic direction. This individual is responsible for identifying, evaluating, and securing investment opportunities, often leading the process from initial deal sourcing through negotiation and closing. A Principal level investor also plays a significant role in supporting portfolio companies, mentoring junior staff, and representing the firm within the ecosystem. This individual functions as a key bridge between the Associates and the Partners, preparing them for future leadership roles within the firm, potentially including partnership.
Key responsibilities Deal sourcing & relationship management
Leading and driving deal flow: Proactively identifying, sourcing, and evaluating potential investment opportunities in MedTech and HealthTech fitting Intuitive Ventures strategic and financial mandate, cultivating relationships with entrepreneurs, founders, and key industry players. This includes leveraging established networks and developing new connections.
Cultivating Strategic Partnerships: Fostering and maintaining deep relationships with entrepreneurs, founders, industry experts, co‑investors, and other stakeholders within the MedTech and HealthTech ecosystem.
Representing the Firm: Actively representing the firm at major industry events, conferences, and through publications, serving as a thought leader and key point of contact within the ecosystem.
Developing and Executing Sourcing Strategies: Working with partners to develop and implement effective strategies for identifying new investment opportunities within target sectors, leveraging market analysis and industry expertise.
Deal evaluation & execution
Leading Due Diligence: Taking primary responsibility for leading the in‑depth due diligence process for investment opportunities, managing cross‑functional teams, and overseeing all aspects of analysis, including competitive landscaping, business analysis, technology assessments, IP, market access, and clinical/regulatory strategy.
Project Management Expertise: Navigating multiple projects simultaneously while maintaining speed and depth of execution and building strong relationships with key partners.
Strategic Financial Analysis & Valuation: Providing strategic oversight and guidance on financial modeling and valuation analysis, ensuring alignment with the firm’s investment thesis and risk appetite.
Investment Committee Presentation & Justification: Preparing and presenting compelling investment memos and presentations to the Investment Committee, providing a clear and persuasive strategic rationale for investment decisions with minimal oversight from Partners.
Leading Deal Negotiation & Structuring: Taking a lead role in negotiating or influencing the negotiation of investment terms, structuring transactions, and overseeing the entire closing process, including liaising with legal counsel, finance, syndicate partners, and other internal/external stakeholders.
Portfolio company support
Strategic Guidance & Board Participation: Providing strategic guidance and operational support to a portfolio of companies, potentially serving as observers. This includes proactively identifying and addressing challenges, leveraging the broader network and resources to accelerate growth, and maintaining current understanding of a company’s progress to plan.
Driving Key Initiatives: Leading and supporting key portfolio company initiatives such as strategic planning, business development, fundraising, and exit strategies.
Performance Management & Value Creation: Actively monitoring portfolio performance, providing strategic insights and recommendations, and implementing initiatives to maximize value creation and to drive toward successful exits.
Reporting and Communication: Ensuring timely and effective communication with lead partners regarding portfolio company performance, challenges, and opportunities, providing regular updates and presentations.
Research & content development
Developing and Championing Investment Theses: Proactively developing and articulating new investment theses in emerging MedTech and HealthTech sectors, leveraging deep industry insights and thought leadership with minimal supervision.
Strategic Landscape Analysis: Leading the development of market analysis and strategic landscape reports, identifying key trends, competitive dynamics, and potential areas for investment. Responsible for writing landscape reports with very limited supervision.
Staying at the Forefront of Innovation: Continuously staying abreast of evolving technology trends, industry developments, market trends and competitive landscapes in both private and public markets, serving as an internal subject matter expert for specific areas of focus.
Internal operations & collaboration
Mentorship & Team Development: Mentoring and guiding junior team members, fostering their professional growth, and contributing to a positive team culture.
Cross‑functional Collaboration & Process Improvement: Collaborating effectively with other team members, including partners, the broader Intuitive Surgical team, and potentially Limited Partners. Identifying and implementing ways to streamline investment processes and enhance firm‑wide initiatives.
