DJS YOUTH RECREATION SPECIALIST I (*REPOST*)

Main Purpose of Job This position assumes primary responsibility for developing and implementing the Center’s recreation program in accordance with the objectives, policies, and responsibilities of the Department. It is responsible for the order, care, and safety of youth and will provide a variety of recreational experiences designed to help participants develop a better awareness of personal care, health, fitness, and general self‑esteem.

Minimum Qualifications

High school graduation or equivalent high school equivalency certificate acceptable to the Maryland State Board of Education.

One year of experience supervising recreational activities of children or youth in a recreation center, fitness center, or school setting.

Education can be substituted with an Associate of Arts degree in a recreational program (e.g., Parks, Recreation and Leisure Studies; Sports and Fitness Administration; Health and Physical Education) providing at least 60 credit hours, with 30 credit hours in required areas.

Military service experience as a non‑commissioned officer in Recreation Aid or Assistant classifications may substitute the required experience on a year‑for‑year basis.

Desired or Preferred Qualifications

At least six months of experience working with youth within the Department of Juvenile Services or a similar agency.

Experience documenting participation levels, hours, and types of recreational activities in a logbook.

Experience applying de‑escalation techniques with youth.

Licenses, Registrations and Certifications

Completion of the Entrance Level Correctional Training Course and passage of the Maryland Correctional Training Commission certificate during the probationary period.

Valid motor vehicle operator’s license in Maryland for duties requiring vehicle operation.

Board‑approved medication technician training and Maryland Board of Nursing (MBON) certification as a Medication Technician for employees assigned to youth centers.

Special Requirements

U.S. citizenship or resident‑alien status; at least 21 years of age.

Completion of thorough background check, fingerprinting, drug testing, oral interview, physical and psychological examinations.

May be required to provide a reachable telephone number due to call‑in duties.

Subject to substance abuse testing in accordance with Code of Maryland Regulation 17.04.09.

Selection Process Applicants must submit complete information on their qualifications before the closing date. Successful candidates will be ranked as Best Qualified, Better Qualified, or Qualified and placed on an eligible employment list for at least one year. The resulting Certified Eligible List may be used for similar positions in this or other state agencies.

Examination Process Applications will be rated based on education, training, and experience. Incomplete applications will not be accepted. Veterans must submit DD 214 Long Form to receive credit.
