About the Opportunity
We seek a
Senior Enterprise Data Architect
to partner with the Department of Housing and Urban Development's Office of the Chief Information Officer (HUD OCIO). In this pivotal leadership role, you will shape and govern the data architecture essential for the agency's AI, analytics, and cloud modernization initiatives. You will define a long-term data vision, establish enterprise standards, and create secure, scalable, cloud-native data ecosystems critical for AI/ML operations. The ideal candidate will play a key role in driving comprehensive data governance, developing frameworks for metadata, data lineage, quality, and stewardship while ensuring adherence to important federal mandates. You'll have the chance to author data models, establish event streams, and guide Data and AI Engineers in delivering flexible and compliant data capabilities. This remote position requires a federal background check and NACI clearance. Candidates must reside in the United States. Key Responsibilities Lead the agency's enterprise data architecture strategy aligned with AI, analytics, and cloud modernization efforts. Architect and oversee the migration of legacy data systems to secure, cloud-native platforms. Develop and maintain comprehensive enterprise data models to facilitate interoperability across various programs. Champion agency-wide data governance initiatives, establishing frameworks for metadata management, data lineage, and quality stewardship. Collaborate with AI/ML teams to design effective data pipelines and model-ready datasets supporting advanced analytics. Provide strategic insights on data modernization roadmaps and emerging technologies to senior leadership. Ensure compliance with federal security and privacy standards for all systems. Establish best practices for data integration patterns and interoperability standards. Lead cross-functional teams and act as the technical authority on data architecture. Mentor junior team members and cultivate a culture of technical excellence. Manage AI/ML-ready cloud infrastructure efficiently. Support the creation of data catalogs and master data management solutions. Qualifications 7+ years of experience in enterprise data architecture or large-scale data engineering. Expertise in enterprise data modeling relevant to grants, housing, and broader program sectors. Knowledge of metadata governance utilizing policy-as-code approaches. Experience in designing an AI-ready knowledge layer and implementing data privacy controls. Proficient in lakehouse architectures and data-contract patterns along with MDM strategies. Experience with event-driven architectures to transition from legacy systems to modern solutions. Strong familiarity with compliance requirements such as FISMA and FedRAMP. Extensive knowledge of cloud-native services and large-scale data processing techniques. Skilled in building AI/ML pipelines and reusable workflows. Legal authorization to work in the U.S. without sponsorship. Technical Skills Proficient in cloud platforms like Azure and AWS. Experience with cloud-native services such as AWS Bedrock and Azure OpenAI. Strong knowledge of relational, NoSQL, and distributed data systems. Experienced in ETL/ELT frameworks like Airflow and Databricks. Active involvement in AI/ML initiatives and data lifecycle management. Skilled in data modeling and schema design focused on AI workloads. Programming expertise in Python, SQL, and Java, among others. Version control proficiency with Git. Solid foundation in data governance and metadata management. Core Competencies Exceptional communication skills to collaborate across diverse teams. Strong understanding of data governance, metadata management, and quality frameworks. Problem-solving skills aimed at scalable AI/ML processes and documentation. Experience in highly regulated environments. Familiarity with federal data standards and frameworks. Agile, iterative development mindset. Awareness of security, privacy, and compliance issues. Education and Certifications Bachelor's degree in a related field such as Computer Science or Data Engineering; a Master's degree is preferred.
