The Summer Camp Director will join the Recreation department to oversee the day-to-day operations of the summer camp program, including staff and participants. The Recreation Department offers two summer day camps, one for students entering grades K-4 and one for students in grades 5-8; there will be Camp Directors assigned to both camp locations. This position reports to the Coordinator of Camps and Enrichment Programs.
Responsibilities
Provide guidance, support, and mentorship to the staff members supervised
Ensure that activity planning, implementation and supervision is consistently meeting and exceeding expectations
Work with the Coordinator of Camps and Enrichment Programs to plan, coordinate, direct and implement programming, for both individuals and groups, in accordance with curriculum objectives and program philosophy
Serve the campers and staff as a positive role model, building healthy and respectful relationships with all
Meet the emotional, social, physical and cognitive needs of each child
Support camper behavioral issues
Sustain open communication and communicate clearly, both orally and in writing, with a variety of stakeholders including children, parents, staff and supervisors
Maintain confidentiality and effectively operate in an environment which involves sensitive situations with participants, families, staff and the general public
Comply with all mandated reporting requirements
Maintain on-going records, such as camper and staff attendance, schedules and time sheets, and written reports
Coordinate field trips, ensuring appropriate supplies, activities and communication with all relevant parties
Provide pre-camp and in-service staff trainings
Participate in evaluation of staff and program during the season and following.
Use independent judgement and personal initiative in the performance of duties and in the absence of supervision
Maintain cleanliness of all utilized facilities to ensure a safe and healthy environment.
Perform duties in a variety of settings including, but not limited to, offices, classrooms, indoor gymnasiums, outdoor fields, waterfront, and field trips to different locations
Regular attendance on scheduled workdays is required.
Required Qualifications
Must be at least 18 years old
Exhibits characteristics of responsibility, dependability, leadership, patience, punctuality, hard work, sense of humor, self-control, integrity, common sense, good judgment and a positive enthusiastic attitude
Knowledge and/or familiarity with:
Basic principles and practices of community recreation
Modern office procedures, methods, and computer equipment
Principles and procedure of confidential record keeping
Effective customer service practices
A variety of games, sports, activities, riddles, songs, and arts & crafts that children will enjoy
Ability to work in a fast-paced environment
Ability to follow and provide direction to complete assigned tasks
Flexible and a team player
A willingness to demonstrate a commitment to the City of Biddeford's work around diversity, equity, accessibility, and inclusion
Preferred Qualifications
Experience working in an after school, camp, recreation or school setting
Experience providing supervision and guidance to members of staff
Experience working with children ages 4-14
Experience scheduling and planning activities for children
Experience addressing camper behavioral issues with children, parents and staff
CPR/ First Aid certified
Job Type Seasonal (May – August)
Salary $20.00 - $22.00 per hour
Schedule
Full Time: up to 40 hours/week (June – August)
Planning weeks: part-time hours June 1st through June 17th , 2026
Orientation: Week of June 22nd
Camp Dates: Monday-Friday; Monday, June 29th – Friday, August 21st , 2026
Work Location Safari Camp, Grades K-4: J. Richard Martin Community Center, 189 Alfred St., Biddeford Tiger Adventure Camp, Grades 5-8: The Clubhouse at Rotary Park, 550 Main St., Biddeford
