Purpose

The Managing Director of the Business of Sports Institute (BOSI) provides strategic, operational, and external‑facing leadership for the Institute. The Managing Director oversees internal staff, manages relationships with BOSI leadership and supporters, and advances BOSI’s mission to serve McCombs and the broader UT community as one of the nation’s leading platforms for sports business education, research, and industry engagement. Key activities include producing the annual BOSI Symposium, managing an advisory council of 30+ members, coordinating research collaborations with UT Athletics, and supporting student programs across undergraduate and graduate levels.

Responsibilities

Operations & Strategic Leadership

  • Lead the day-to-day operations of BOSI, partnering with the Executive Director and Institute staff to plan board meetings, the Business of Sports Summit, and other BOSI events.
  • Manage committees supporting BOSI activities, including symposium planning, alumni engagement, student programming, communications, and external partnerships.
  • Develop and implement marketing, communications, and social media strategies to enhance BOSI’s visibility and influence.
  • Provide strategic guidance to faculty, staff, and board members on long‑term goals, growth opportunities, and Institute direction.
  • Oversee the annual budget, ensuring financial goals are met and revenue opportunities are maximized.
  • Lead the preparation of annual reports, quarterly newsletters, and monthly social media calendars.
  • Supervise BOSI staff, assign work, and establish expectations and performance standards for team members.

Development, Fundraising & Alumni Engagement

  • Create, implement, and oversee a comprehensive fundraising and alumni engagement strategy in support of BOSI’s strategic priorities.
  • Collaborate with McCombs Development, University Development, and other UT partners to coordinate development activities and advancement initiatives.
  • Manage BOSI advisory councils, including the Executive Council, Advisory Council, and Associate Advisory Council; recruit new members and design meaningful engagement opportunities.
  • Cultivate and steward donor relationships through in-person meetings, calls, events, and ongoing communication.
  • Secure funding for major BOSI activities, including the annual symposium, student programming, research initiatives, treks, networking events, and other flagship programs.

External Relations & National Profile Building

  • Establish and maintain strong relationships with key stakeholders, including major donors, industry leaders, alumni, and campus partners, to elevate BOSI’s reputation and influence.
  • Stay actively engaged with trends in the sports industry, sports analytics, higher‑education best practices, and relevant policy developments to position BOSI as a national leader in sports business thought leadership.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree and at least 7 years of experience in client engagement, relationship management, team leadership, project management, or business planning within higher education or the corporate sector.
  • Demonstrated ability to think strategically and drive organizational growth.
  • Proven success managing multiple projects and deadlines.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain complex issues to varied audiences.
  • Flexibility and the ability to navigate a large, matrixed organization.
  • Proficiency with MS Word, Excel, Outlook, and comfort learning new technologies.
  • Previous experience writing gift proposals and/or grants.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Relevant graduate degree.
  • Experience in the sports or entertainment industry.
  • Experience planning large‑scale events, workshops, or student programs.
  • Experience managing and supervising staff.
  • Experience in fundraising, donor relations, or external partnership management.
  • Familiarity with University of Texas policies, procedures, and administrative systems.

Salary Range

  • $110,000 - $120,000 + depending on qualifications

Working Conditions

  • Works in standard office conditions with repetitive use of a keyboard at a workstation.
  • Evening and weekend hours may be required during peak periods and special events.
  • Applicants must be legally authorized to work for any employer in the United States. This position is not eligible for sponsorship of work visas.
  • This is an Austin, TX-based position.
