Primary Objective of Position Work independently to orchestrate a comprehensive communications strategy for the Shawnee area travel industry, including but not limited to the implementation of new technologies and best practices. Initiate and follow to completion the recruitment of new top-tier events and activities to the Shawnee area. Implement the department’s strategic direction to recruit individual travelers, group tours, and business travelers.

Essential Job Functions

Physical demands may include standing, walking, stooping, bending, prolonged sitting, and lifting up to 35 lbs (greater with assistance);

Computer skills required, including some programming and data management.

Advanced knowledge of “Microsoft Office” programs.

Duties of this position are performed indoors and occasionally outdoors in the weather conditions prevalent at the time.

The noise level in the work environments is usually moderate to loud during events and minimal during non-event times.

Collaboratively staff the Shawnee Welcome Center with other employees and volunteers.

Must possess a valid Oklahoma Driver’s License and maintain a status of insurability.

Some night and weekend work is required.

Position does require some overnight travel, including some out-of-state travel.

Major Areas of Accountability and Performance

Highly skilled with communications, design, online initiatives, public interaction, and customer service.

Take initiative and make recommendations for better communications strategies with limited supervision.

Meet industry and departmental deadlines as required.

Coordinate with the Director of Tourism and industry partners on the creation of marketing pieces and subsequent distribution of those materials.

Initiate sales calls and follow‑ups with prospective partners and guests.

Multi‑task several independently led projects and collaborative programs.

With limited supervision, submit paperwork and reports for the department.

Develop handbook, training materials, schedule, and expectations for Volunteers.

Education, Training, and Experience Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in an associated field or equivalent experience

Five years plus experience in sales, communications, the travel industry or community/economic development

Computer knowledge and advanced skills required.

Strong knowledge of the Shawnee area and State of Oklahoma

Excellent verbal, written and presentation skills.

Must be able to project a professional manner and appearance, and communicate effectively with management, clients, staff, and the general public.

Intellectual/Social Demands While performing the essential functions of this job, the employee is asked to multitask under time limits. Position requires constant attention to precise details and accuracy of specified standards, including following simple to complex (more than 3 steps) instructions, and concentration, which frequently extends beyond 30 minutes at a time. This position requires the use of interpersonal skills, including the ability to direct/motivate/inform staff/colleagues and foster collaboration, being able to recognize and resolve conflicts, being able to openly communicate in writing, verbally and digitally with a large spectrum of contacts.
