About the Role L&T Construction, Inc. is seeking an experienced Heavy Civil Estimator to support bidding and preconstruction efforts for projects throughout the Memphis metro area and Mid‑South region. This role will focus on earthwork, mass grading, site development, storm drainage, water, sewer, and underground utility construction.
The ideal candidate will be responsible for preparing accurate and competitive cost estimates, reviewing plans and specifications, performing quantity takeoffs, analyzing production and pricing, and helping transition awarded work to the operations team. This position plays a key role in helping L&T pursue and win profitable work.
Key Responsibilities
Review plans, specifications, geotechnical reports, and contract documents for bidding purposes
Perform quantity takeoffs for earthwork, grading, storm drainage, water, sewer, and underground utility scopes
Analyze labor, equipment, material, trucking, subcontractor, and production costs
Solicit and evaluate subcontractor and supplier quotes
Identify scope gaps, risks, value engineering opportunities, and clarifications needed prior to bid
Attend pre‑bid meetings, site visits, and project walk‑downs as required
Prepare detailed bid proposals, budgets, and estimate summaries
Coordinate with project managers, superintendents, and company leadership during bid review
Assist with turnover of awarded projects to operations, including estimate review and scope handoff
Support change order pricing, budget updates, and other preconstruction tasks as needed
Qualifications
Experience in heavy civil estimating with a focus on earthwork, grading, underground utilities, drainage, or site development
Strong ability to read and interpret civil plans, profiles, details, specifications, and bid documents
Experience performing quantity takeoffs and developing production‑based estimates
Understanding of means and methods for excavation, fill placement, utility installation, and related civil work
Strong knowledge of labor, equipment, trucking, and material pricing
Proficiency in Excel and standard estimating/document management software
Experience with HCSS HeavyBid, Agtek, Bluebeam, or similar estimating/takeoff software preferred
Strong communication, organization, and time‑management skills
Ability to work independently and collaboratively with operations and management teams
Preferred Background
Experience estimating public or private civil sitework projects
Experience with mass grading, lime treatment, soil stabilization, drainage structures, and utility installation
Knowledge of production tracking, subcontractor leveling, and bid comparison analysis
Field experience in civil construction is a plus
