Employee Relations Specialist Lead The Employee Relations Specialist Lead oversees complex employee relations matters across the organization with a focus on compliance with California labor law, federal and state immigration regulations, and internal policy standards. This role serves as a strategic advisor to HR leadership, ensures consistent and legally compliant practices, leads high‑risk investigations, and partners with cross‑functional teams to strengthen workplace culture and reduce organizational risk.
Essential Functions Employee Relations Leadership
Lead the resolution of complex or sensitive employee relations cases, including allegations of discrimination, harassment, retaliation, misconduct, and policy violations.
Provide coaching and guidance to HR business partners, managers, and senior leaders on performance management, corrective action, conflict resolution, and policy interpretation.
Ensure consistent application of company policies and ER practices across locations.
Lead and manage the employee separation process, including voluntary and involuntary terminations. Ensure all actions are handled consistently, respectfully, and in compliance with company policies and applicable laws. Partner with HR, Legal, and leadership to assess risk, determine appropriate action, and execute separations.
Compliance With California Labor Law
Monitor and interpret changes in employment regulations, including wage and hour rules, meal and rest break requirements, pay transparency, workplace safety, and protected categories.
Partner with Legal and HR leadership to update policies, processes, and training materials in response to new California legislation or case law.
Conduct audits of ER practices, documentation, and manager actions to ensure compliance with state requirements.
Oversight Immigration Law (Federal & State)
Responsible for tracking and addressing expiring employee work authorizations. Evaluate each case and determine appropriate action, including coordination of renewal efforts or initiation of separation processes, ensuring compliance with organizational policies and legal requirements.
Collaborate with legal counsel and external immigration partners on visa processes, renewals, and compliance risks.
Train HR and managers on lawful hiring practices, anti‑discrimination rules, and proper handling of immigration‑related documentation.
Investigations & Documentation
Conduct thorough, impartial investigations, including interviews, evidence review, findings reports, and recommended actions.
Maintain detailed, confidential documentation aligned with legal standards and internal protocols.
Prepare summaries, trend analyses, and risk reports for HR and executive leadership.
Policy & Process Development
Lead the creation, revision, and communication of HR policies and employee‑facing guidelines.
Identify opportunities to improve ER processes, reduce risk, and enhance employee experience.
Support training initiatives on workplace conduct, compliance, and manager responsibilities.
Cross‑Functional Collaboration
Partner with Legal, Compliance, Talent Acquisition, and HR Operations on matters involving labor law, immigration, and regulatory requirements.
Support organizational change initiatives, workforce planning, and employee engagement strategies.
Represent the ER function in audits, legal reviews, and regulatory inquiries.
You’ll be successful with the following qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business, or related field preferred.
5–7+ years of progressive employee relations experience, including work in California.
Demonstrated expertise in California labor and employment law.
Strong working knowledge of federal and state immigration regulations (I‑9, E‑Verify, work authorization, visa processes).
Experience conducting complex workplace investigations.
Excellent communication, documentation, and conflict‑resolution skills.
Ability to manage sensitive information with discretion and sound judgment.
Preferred
PHR, SPHR, SHRM‑CP, or SHRM‑SCP certification.
Experience in multi‑site or multi‑state organizations.
Prior leadership or mentorship experience within an HR or ER team.
Experience partnering with legal counsel on high‑risk cases.
