Mechanical Designer
Moonshot, Dallas, TX, United States
We are seeking a detail-oriented Mechanical Designer to join our engineering team. This role is responsible for translating engineering sketches, concepts, and specifications into accurate, production-ready 3D models and technical drawings using SolidWorks. The Mechanical Designer will play a key role in moving designs from concept through fully populated assemblies while ensuring manufacturability, documentation accuracy, and adherence to company and industry standards. Working closely with engineers and cross-functional teams, this position supports efficient design execution and high-quality manufacturing outcomes.
Key Responsibilities
Develop detailed 3D models and assemblies in SolidWorks from conceptual sketches, engineering inputs, and specifications, ensuring accuracy and alignment with company design standards. Create fully populated mechanical assemblies that support production documentation, assembly instructions, and downstream manufacturing processes. Apply GD&T principles to engineering drawings and models to ensure design intent is communicated clearly and components meet manufacturability and tolerance requirements. Collaborate with engineers and cross-functional teams to translate conceptual ideas and rough sketches into functional, manufacturable mechanical designs. Maintain CAD data integrity within PDM systems, managing revisions, part libraries, and documentation to ensure accurate configuration control. Support prototype development and design reviews, incorporating feedback from engineering and manufacturing teams to refine designs prior to production. Qualifications
Associate’s degree in Mechanical Design, Mechanical Drafting, Engineering Technology, or a related technical field, or equivalent hands‑on professional experience. 3+ years of professional experience creating detailed 3D mechanical models and assemblies in SolidWorks within an engineering, manufacturing, or product development environment. Advanced proficiency in SolidWorks part modeling, assemblies, and drawing generation, including creation of production‑ready models and fabrication drawings. Strong understanding of manufacturing processes such as machining, sheet metal fabrication, and large mechanical assemblies, with the ability to design for manufacturability. Working knowledge of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) and experience producing technical drawings aligned with ASME drafting standards. Experience managing CAD data, revisions, and documentation using PDM/PLM systems such as SolidWorks PDM or Windchill. Exceptional attention to detail and commitment to design accuracy. Strong verbal and written communication skills for collaborating with engineering and manufacturing teams. Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities simultaneously in a fast‑paced environment. Strong problem‑solving mindset with the ability to translate conceptual ideas into practical mechanical designs. Preferred Qualifications
Familiarity with electrical enclosure or power distribution equipment standards such as UL891, UL508A, UL67, and UL1008. Certified SolidWorks Professional (CSWP) or Certified SolidWorks Associate (CSWA) certification. Experience working in a manufacturing, industrial equipment, or R&D environment supporting prototype and production design. Why Moonshot?
