If applying for an Entry-Level position:
This position requires applicants to pass a pre-employment exam. We have partnered with Lower Columbia College (LCC) in Longview, WA, to administer our exams.
Applicants must take the ACT work keys exam no later than April 7, 2026. ***To register for a testing time go to or call the Testing Center directly at 360-442-2353. Select City of Longview Employment Testing and select the City of Longview Clerical Exam. The exam cost is $90.00. Applicants will need a Level 4 or higher in each category to be considered. Test scores are good for 5 years.
*** Financial assistance is available through LCC. Inquire and apply with the LCC Testing Center.

**You do not need to take the pre-employment exam.** Please see Lateral minimum qualifications to ensure you qualify as a lateral candidate. Candidates will be ranked on an eligibility list based on cumulative interview scores. Those deemed most qualified for the position will be referred to the Police Department for final consideration and selection.

Position Information: The first level of the Administrative Support Series is responsible for efficiently performing administrative support duties that could include: filing and copying a variety of materials; entering and reconciling data for a variety of law enforcement records; verifying accuracy of information entered into criminal justice systems, removing entries into criminal justice databases as required by law, typing; answering telephones; assisting with public disclosure and records retention/destruction; cashiering; ensuring confidentiality of information, providing excellent customer service; working with other agencies in the criminal justice system and assisting the public with a variety of services provided by the police department. Essential Job Duties
Performs various routine clerical duties, utilizing standard office equipment, to include: screening incoming calls; taking and transmitting messages; making photocopies; performing data entry; validations, data removal/clearing data from criminal justice systems, faxing documents; keyboarding; and word processing.
Processes, receives, sorts, and distributes a variety of information, reports, background checks, correspondence, deliveries, and mail.
Responds to requests for information and public disclosure requests from the general public and/or other interested parties; answers routine questions; and directs visitors to appropriate locations.
Files documents alphabetically, numerically, or by other prescribed methods. Assists with preparing and reconciling a variety of basic reports in assigned area of responsibility.
Provides back up assistance to front counter staff as needed.
Monitors and restocks office supplies and materials.
Assists with preparing and reconciling a variety of basic reports in assigned area of responsibility.
Performs other duties of a similar nature or level. Minimum Qualifications
Training and Experience Entry-Level: High School Diploma or GED; and up to 1 year of general office experience. Must complete and pass ACCESS Level II certification upon hiring.
Lateral: High School Diploma or GED; and up to 1 year of Police Records work experience. ACCESS Level II Certified
Note: Additional qualifying experience may, at the discretion of the hiring manager, substitute for the required education of the assigned position.
Licensing Requirements Valid Washington State Driver's License Ideal Candidate Information
Knowledge of: Customer service principles; Modern office procedures, methods, and equipment; Invoice and voucher processing Basic filing and recordkeeping principles Public disclosure/records retention/destruction rules/laws Basic filing and recordkeeping principles. Skill in: Filing; Keyboarding; Writing Using modern office equipment; Providing customer service; remaining calm in tense situations Using computers and related software applications; Auditing, monitoring, proofing and preparing a variety of department-specific invoices, reports, budgets, check-lists, licensing, etc. Prioritizing workload to ensure job tasks with firm deadlines are met Quality control/ensuring accuracy of work product Communication and interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisor, the general public, etc. sufficient to exchange or convey information and to receive work direction.
