Director of Mechanical Engineering (Plumbing, Piping & HVAC) - Charlotte

Gryphon Oakwood is partnering with a leading $1B mechanical contractor to recruit a Director of Engineering for its growing Charlotte, North Carolina office. This role will lead engineering strategy and technical execution across large-scale ground-up construction projects.

The firm is recognized for delivering complex HVAC, piping, and plumbing systems for highly technical environments, including life sciences facilities, hyperscale data centers, and advanced manufacturing plants.

The Director of Engineering will oversee multidisciplinary engineering teams, drive design coordination with preconstruction and operations, and help strengthen technical standards to support the continued growth of the Charlotte business.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and develop the engineering team supporting large-scale mechanical construction projects across life sciences, data centers, and advanced manufacturing facilities.
  • Oversee engineering execution from preconstruction through project delivery, ensuring alignment with project schedules, budgets, and technical requirements.
  • Collaborate closely with preconstruction, operations, and project management teams to support design development, constructability reviews, and value engineering initiatives.
  • Establish and maintain engineering standards, processes, and best practices to improve consistency and efficiency across projects.
  • Provide technical leadership on complex HVAC, piping, and plumbing systems for large ground-up construction projects.
  • Support business growth by assisting with proposal development, client presentations, and strategic planning for the Charlotte office.
  • Mentor and develop engineering staff while helping to build and scale the engineering function as the business expands.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline.
  • 10–15+ years of experience in mechanical engineering within commercial or industrial construction environments.
  • Proven experience supporting large, complex projects such as data centers, life sciences facilities, or advanced manufacturing plants.
  • Strong understanding of HVAC, piping, and plumbing systems within large-scale construction projects.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience managing engineering teams and coordinating with cross-functional project teams.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills with the ability to work effectively with clients, design partners, and internal stakeholders.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred.
