Job Description ASSISTANT DIRECTOR OF EXCEPTIONAL CHILDREN PROGRAMS
Responsible To:
Director of Exceptional Children Programs
Primary Job Responsibility:
To assist in the administration of those services and activities pertaining to district programs for exceptional children, including special education and psychological services.
Essential Functions of Job Responsibility Special Education
Supports the implementation of Senate Bill 1 across all schools as related to exceptional children.
Implements all rules and regulations, policies and administrative guidelines as adopted by the Board of Education.
Coordinates school staff and other District staff to research and implement effective programs for students with disabilities.
Participates in the design, coordination and implementation of collaborative programs that support Least Restrictive Environment.
Provides direct support and assistance to school administrators and teachers.
Assists the Director of Exceptional children Programs in the supervision, evaluation, and training of assigned District-level and School-level special education staff.
Identifies instructional techniques and strategies that improve the achievement of special education students in both special education and general education classes; conducts professional development activities; provides classroom support.
Integrates researched-based instructional programs and strategies for students with disabilities that align with the District’s general education program.
Analyzes data and applies the analysis in assisting Educational Services, Special Education and staff in implementing age/grade appropriate programs and services for students with disabilities.
Assists with training for all district staff on special education laws, regulations and district procedures.
Plans, designs and implements state mandates as well as prepare documents and reports related to state and federal legislative compliance.
Maintains accurate special education records and monitors the documentation of special education services provided.
Serves as Chairperson for ARC Meetings.
Serves on district, local, county and state committees as assigned.
Assists individuals and/or groups of staff members in locating and purchasing appropriate instructional materials and assessment instruments.
Participates in conferences with principals and regular staff to assist in developing appropriate mainstreaming schedules, instructional levels, and grading procedures.
Assures the implementation of all due process procedures (with appropriate documentation) within required timelines.
Assures confidentiality in all procedures.
Communicates with parents, as needed, to help resolve conflicts or to understand programs and services.
Assists special education teachers in preparing highly-qualified forms.
Assists, as needed, by serving as a liaison with contractual service agencies.
Assists in planning and facilitating appropriate community-based learning activities for low functioning handicapped students.
Psychological and Testing Services
Assists in supervising the district's psychological and testing services as outlined below.
Assists in formulation of procedures in evaluation process.
Assists the director in maintaining current procedures for the referral, identification and placement of handicapped students.
Assures that comprehensive written reports for educational and psychological assessments are completed for every evaluation.
Other Responsibilities
Participates in 504 Coordinator trainings so as to assist the Director as needed.
Assists with district RTI and CEIS programs/implementation.
Assists with Medicaid Billing and timely reporting for KDE, Medicaid, and other state and federal reporting agencies.
Works to resolve conflicts and complaints as appropriate for assignment.
Performs related duties as assigned by supervisor.
Maintains a professional and appropriate appearance.
Maintains regular and predictable attendance.
Adheres to the Professional Code of Ethics.
Education and Experience
Valid State Teacher Certificate in an area of Special Education (Required)
Instructional Leadership/Principal Certificate or Instructional Leadership/Supervisor of Instruction Certificate (Required)
Five (5) years of certified experience in a special education setting or its equivalent (Required)
Director of Special Education Certificate (Preferred)
