Band 3 MKR Retail Operations Manager Primary Responsibilities Manage the overall retail operation for Mauna Kea Resort including the golf shop and other designated resort retail outlets. Responsibilities include sourcing, purchasing, merchandising, inventory control, and financial management of retail merchandise including golf equipment, apparel, logo merchandise, gift items, and specialty retail products.

The position is responsible for maintaining strong vendor relationships, establishing merchandise strategies, monitoring financial performance, supervising retail staff, and supporting golf operations to ensure a high-quality retail experience for resort guests, homeowners, members, and tournament participants.

Meet with authorized vendors and manufacturers to source, select, and order merchandise to be sold in resort retail shops including golf equipment, apparel, logo merchandise, accessories, and gift items.

Develop and manage a comprehensive retail merchandising strategy including seasonal assortments, custom logo merchandise, and tournament-related merchandise offerings.

Manage and monitor the Open-to-Buy (OTB) purchasing plan in coordination with the Director of Golf and Hotel Managers to maintain appropriate inventory investment and sales performance.

Establish and maintain appropriate inventory par levels and reorder points to ensure optimal inventory levels while minimizing overstocks and stockouts.

Analyze retail sales data, inventory reports, and financial results to identify opportunities to improve revenue, gross margin, and inventory turnover.

Manage product lifecycle including pricing strategies, markups, markdowns, promotional sales, and discontinuation of underperforming merchandise.

Maintain and enforce high standards of visual merchandising and retail presentation consistent with the luxury brand standards of Mauna Kea Resort.

Develop strong relationships with vendor representatives to maintain awareness of industry trends, new product offerings, and competitive retail strategies.

Source unique and exclusive merchandise opportunities including custom resort-branded apparel and gift items that enhance the resort retail experience.

Supervise and train golf shop and retail associates to ensure exceptional guest service and strong product knowledge.

Assist homeowners, club members, and resort guests with merchandise requests, special orders, and product recommendations.

Monitor and review retail shop merchandise sales and financial reports with the Director of Golf and Hotel Managers and recommend operational improvements.

Coordinate merchandise needs for golf tournaments, member events, and resort programs.

Work retail shop Manager on Duty shifts as required.

Remain current on retail merchandising trends within the golf industry, luxury resorts, and lifestyle retail markets.

Perform other duties as assigned or required.

Retail Performance Metrics (Key Performance Indicators)

The Retail Operations Manager is responsible for achieving retail financial and operational performance targets including, but not limited to:

Retail revenue growth

Gross margin performance

Inventory turnover rates

Sales per square foot

Average transaction value

Sell-through rates by merchandise category

Inventory shrinkage and loss control

Achievement of Open-to-Buy purchasing targets

Guest and member satisfaction with retail experience

Regular reporting and analysis of these metrics will be conducted to support strategic merchandising and purchasing decisions.

Retail operations at Mauna Kea Resort must reflect the resort’s luxury brand positioning and commitment to exceptional guest experiences.

Merchandising expectations include:

Maintaining visually compelling retail displays that reflect the lifestyle and heritage of Mauna Kea Resort.

Presenting merchandise assortments that appeal to resort guests, homeowners, and members while balancing golf, resort lifestyle, and gift merchandise.

Ensuring retail offerings include high-quality apparel, distinctive logo merchandise, and unique items that reflect the resort’s identity and location.

Rotating merchandise displays regularly to maintain freshness and encourage repeat purchases.

Ensuring pricing, product selection, and display standards remain competitive with other premier golf resorts and luxury destination retail environments.

Supporting resort events, tournaments, and seasonal programming through creative retail merchandising.

Other Duties

Coordinate and facilitate periodic and annual physical inventory counts for resort retail locations.

Maintain accurate receiving procedures and inventory controls within the POS and inventory management systems.

Participate in required resort meetings.

Assist other departments within the resort as necessary to support service standards and operational needs.

Working Conditions

Normal office conditions.

Outdoors in various weather conditions.

Indoors in retail shops or storerooms.

May be required to travel off-island for merchandise sourcing, vendor meetings, or trade shows.

Work Hours

Must be able to work a schedule determined by the Director of Golf.

Must be able to work long and irregular hours including weekends and holidays.

Must be able to work more than 40 hours per week.

Equipment Use

Proficient in the use of a computer and the resort’s POS, inventory management, and purchasing systems.

Ability to use the telephone.

Ability to use various office equipment including calculators, photocopiers, and printers.

Operate golf carts or other utility vehicles.

Golf tag engraving machine.

Hand truck, box cutter, price tag machine and other retail equipment.

Mental and Physical Demands

Ability to prioritize and organize workload to ensure deadlines are met.

Able to manage stressful and challenging situations.

Able to stand and walk during most of shift while overseeing retail operations.

Lift, carry, push, and pull up to and over 50 lbs.

Able to sit at a desk to complete administrative duties.

Communication Demands

Must have the ability to communicate verbally and in writing with employees, department managers, guests, homeowners, members, and vendors.

Ability to communicate effectively over the phone and in person.

Four-year college degree in business, hospitality, retail management, or related field preferred, or a minimum of three years related work experience.

Experience in retail merchandising, purchasing, inventory control, and sales management.

Demonstrated ability to supervise and manage retail staff while achieving sales and service goals.

Strong organizational, analytical, and multi-tasking skills.

Must possess a positive attitude and provide friendly, professional service.
