Job Summary Assists with and helps coordinate multiple environmental programs and projects related to environmental compliance, environmental stewardship, and NPS contractual requirements related to environmental sustainability.

The Details

Position Type: Seasonal

Season Dates: April 30 – October 28, 2026

Pay: $16.45 per hour

Schedule: Typical schedule is 40 hours, 5 days per week (may include weekends, evenings, and holidays)

Responsibilities Assist in preparing for and developing sustainable business strategies and new environmental programs for Xanterra including program development pertaining to Xanterra’s concession contract with the National Park Service. This includes, but is not limited to:

Oversee all waste diversion programs implemented at Xanterra operations:

Compost collection in all kitchens and bin transport

Operation Shrively Apples

Recycling supersacks, as needed

E‑Waste recycling

Cardboard recycling, if implemented

Perform training of new staff in all departments where the Waste Diversion programs are implemented (includes but not limited to Food & Beverage kitchen staff and managers, Lodging housekeeping staff and managers, Porter staff and managers).

Oversee data collection and analysis related to the above waste diversion programs.

Assist with required annual July internal Waste Audit.

Required to be an active participant in the Green Team, Fall Event planning, and Fall Event participation.

Assist with tasks associated with NPF grant for development of a Circular Reuse Economy as requested.

Review, record and analyze utility data collected as part of the Ecometrix tracking system for both usage variances and costs.

Review and become familiar with Xanterra’s ISO 14001 EMS programs.

Assist with Sustainability internal inspections of all operations including Phantom Ranch for compliance with ISO 14001 programs.

Complete at least one Sustainability internal inspection and

Assist with developing and implementing corrective or preventative action plans to address any issues found during the inspection.

Assist EHS Manager, as requested, with EHS inspections.

Work on 2027 Green Restaurant Association re‑certification for El Tovar, AZ Steakhouse, and Harvey House Café.

Assist with employee training as needed, including General Orientation (NEO) and Our Softer Footprint training.

Assist with developing and implementing employee and guest environmental education with a variety of media.

Develop and maintain a positive and productive relationship with the Xanterra department directors, managers, and staff.

Possible additional duties include:

File and analyze results of monthly reports of online guest comments as they relate to environmental issues.

Remain abreast of best available technologies and equipment advances that relate to Xanterra operations, in particular pertaining to reducing environmental impacts including those related to resource usage.

Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Student in a Bachelors’ (or Masters’) degree program in sustainability, environmental science or related field.

Classroom background in sustainable business is preferred.

Ability to drive a box truck and back into the three loading docks is preferred.

Ability to positively interact with a wide variety of personalities.

Demonstrated ability to clearly and effectively communicate both verbally and in writing.

Demonstrated competency with Microsoft Office and/or similar applications.

Good organizational skills and ability to work with minimal supervision to complete assigned tasks in a timely and professional manner.

Knowledge of Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design (LEED) Freen Associate standards is a plus.

Interest in hiking within the Canyon is a plus, not required.

Physical Requirements Constantly: Stand, walk, sit, handle.

Frequently: Reach, lift/carry up to 50 lbs.

Occasionally: Hike, climb, crawl, squat/kneel, bend, lift/carry over 100 lbs, push/pull up to 100 lbs.
