
Director of Financial Management

Position Summary
The Director of Financial Management provides strategic financial oversight and operational leadership for SEWA-AIFW’s fiscal health and compliance. This role is responsible for managing the organization’s invoicing and audit records, establishing and maintaining internal financial policies and procedures, and ensuring full compliance with applicable federal, state, and local laws and regulations. The Financial Director works closely with executive leadership, program staff, and external auditors to support the organization’s mission of promoting total family wellness for South Asian families in Minnesota.
Key Responsibilities
1. Invoicing & Accounts Management
- Oversee and manage the full invoicing cycle, including issuance, tracking, and reconciliation of all organizational invoices.
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date accounts payable and accounts receivable records in compliance with nonprofit accounting standards.
- Monitor grant expenditures and ensure timely billing to funders in accordance with contract requirements.
- Coordinate with program staff to verify invoices align with budgeted program activities and deliverables.
- Resolve billing discrepancies and respond to vendor and funder inquiries in a timely manner.
2. Audit Records & Financial Reporting
- Maintain complete, organized, and audit-ready financial records for all organizational transactions.
- Lead preparation for and coordination of annual external audits, including liaising with independent auditors and providing all required documentation.
- Ensure timely and accurate completion of IRS Form 990 and all required state and federal financial filings.
- Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements and reports for leadership and the Board of Directors.
- Develop and maintain audit trails and documentation systems that meet regulatory and funder requirements.
- Coordinate responses to audit findings and implement corrective action plans as needed.
3. Policies, Procedures & Regulatory Compliance
- Develop, implement, and regularly review financial policies and internal controls to safeguard organizational assets.
- Ensure all financial activities comply with federal regulations (including OMB Uniform Guidance for federal grants), Minnesota state law, and applicable local requirements.
- Monitor changes in nonprofit financial regulations and proactively update policies and procedures accordingly.
- Maintain organizational compliance with tax-exempt status requirements under IRS Section 501(c)(3).
- Provide guidance to staff on financial policies, allowable expenditures, and fiscal compliance responsibilities.
- Support Chief Executive Officer with policy review, financial oversight responsibilities, and governance requirements.
4. Budget Management & Financial Planning
- Lead the annual organizational budgeting process in collaboration with the Chief Executive Officer and program managers.
- Monitor budget performance and provide variance analysis and forecasting on a regular basis.
- Oversee grant financial management, including budget tracking, drawdowns, and financial narrative preparation for reports.
- Assess financial risks and recommend strategies to ensure organizational sustainability.
5. Organizational & Team Support
- Supervise or coordinate with bookkeeping and accounting support staff or contractors.
- Participate in staff meetings, leadership team meetings, and Board meetings, as needed.
- Contribute to grant applications by preparing financial documents, budgets, and budget justifications.
- Support a culture of fiscal responsibility and transparency across the organization.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field required; CPA or Master’s degree preferred.
- Minimum 5 years of progressively responsible financial management experience, with at least 2 years in a nonprofit setting.
- Demonstrated expertise in nonprofit accounting standards (GAAP), fund accounting, and grant financial management.
- Working knowledge of federal, state, and local compliance requirements for nonprofit organizations, including OMB Uniform Guidance.
- Experience managing and preparing for external audits.
- Proficiency in accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks) and Microsoft Office Suite.
- Strong organizational skills with high attention to detail and accuracy.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to present financial information clearly to non-financial audiences.
- Demonstrated commitment to SEWA-AIFW’s mission and values of cultural responsiveness and community wellness.
- Experience working with immigrant, refugee, or South Asian communities is a plus.
- Bilingual skills are a plus.
Salary Range: $80,000 – $95,000 annually, commensurate with skills and experience.
