No Job Summary:

The Cultural Ambassador II provides a variety of customer services, including support, interpretation, and translation, while acting as a cultural broker to help create a remarkable patient experience for non‑English‑speaking patients, family members, and visitors. Responsibilities

Interpretation & Translation Services:

Communicates effectively to meet the needs of all internal and external stakeholders. Provides face‑to‑face medical interpretation primarily for patients, family members, and visitors. Provides telephone interpretation services as needed. Assists with document translation, including providing medical document translations for UVA Community Health facilities as needed.

Quality & Process Improvement:

Reviews processes, identifying and recommending opportunities for improvement. Actively participates in identifying opportunities to improve the experience for patients and guests. Participates in community engagement events as needed.

Patient & Communication Support:

Provides cultural information to facilitate support for a treatment plan. Ensures that information about the patient’s outpatient services, hospitalization, advance directives, consents, diagnoses, and treatment plans is accurately communicated. Provides communication and updates to patients and guests and ensures their needs are met. Communicates effectively to meet the needs of all internal and external stakeholders. Responds quickly to irregular and emergency requests. Maintains confidentiality in all matters related to patient care and visitor issues.

The incumbent may be asked to perform additional duties as assigned. Qualifications

Education:

High School Diploma or GED required. Associate’s Degree preferred. Experience:

Minimum of 3 years of experience in a foreign language (Spanish) medical interpreter and translations in a healthcare role. Refer to the Life Support Training Policy for additional details. Licensure:

National Board of Certification for Medical Interpreters (NBCMI) or Certified Healthcare Interpreter (CHI). Additional skills/requirements required:

Complete departmental oral and written translation assessment, proficiency in the use of computer software including the Microsoft Office suite or similar, ability to communicate effectively with all levels of authority, successful completion of the 40‑hour “Bridging the Gap” course.
