Director of Pharmacy Performance

The Director of Pharmacy Performance reports to the President and is a leader within the Pharmacy Services team. The Director of Pharmacy Performance is responsible for driving the financial, operational, and clinical performance of the pharmacy enterprise through data-driven strategy, disciplined execution, and cross-functional leadership. This role oversees key pharmacy performance metrics including inventory optimization, purchasing strategy, gross profit, drug pricing, prescription-level reimbursement, clinical MTM programs, and immunization performance, while partnering closely with Corporate Compliance to ensure all activities align with legal, regulatory, and payer requirements. This leader serves as the central connector between operations, finance, clinical services, purchasing, and compliance—translating data into actionable insights that improve margin, cash flow and patient outcomes.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Own and manage enterprise-wide pharmacy performance metrics including:
    • Inventory turns, days on hand, shrink, and obsolete inventory
    • Purchasing efficiency, wholesaler contract compliance, and buy-side optimization
    • Gross profit, margin performance, and cost of goods analysis
  • Develop and monitor store-level and enterprise dashboards to track performance against targets.
  • Identify margin leakage and implement corrective strategies related to pricing, purchasing, and workflow.
  • Partner with pharmacy operations leaders to drive execution of performance initiatives at the store level.

Drug Pricing & Reimbursement Optimization:

  • Oversee drug pricing strategy to balance competitiveness, margin protection, and payer requirements.
  • Analyze prescription-level reimbursement to identify underperforming drugs, payers, and plans.
  • Lead initiatives to improve reimbursement outcomes including:
    • NDC purchasing optimization
    • MAC appeal strategies
    • Payer contract performance analysis
    • Cash vs. third-party pricing strategies
  • Collaborate with finance and third-party teams to model reimbursement trends and financial risk.
  • Serve as the primary owner of pharmacy performance analytics and reporting.
  • Translate complex data into clear, actionable insights for executive leadership and field teams.
  • Lead continuous improvement initiatives using performance trends, benchmarks, and predictive analytics.
  • Support strategic planning, budgeting, and forecasting related to pharmacy operations and growth.

Clinical Programs & Revenue Growth:

  • Lead performance strategy for clinical services, including:
    • Medication Therapy Management (MTM)
    • Immunization programs
    • EQUIPP initiatives
    • Other billable clinical initiatives
  • Establish targets for clinical volume, revenue, and patient engagement.

Compliance & Regulatory Partnership:

  • Work closely with Corporate Compliance to ensure pharmacy operations meet all federal, state, and payer regulatory requirements. Oversee teammate projects to support compliance needs.
  • Support audits, corrective action plans, and compliance-driven process improvements.
  • Proactively identify regulatory risk areas tied to pricing, billing, inventory, and clinical services.

Leadership & Cross-Functional Collaboration:

  • Lead and develop a high-performing team focused on pharmacy analytics, performance improvement, or related functions.

  • Act as a strategic advisor to senior leadership on pharmacy performance risks and opportunities.
  • Develop and manage the department budget, monitor financial performance, and implement cos-saving measures while maintaining quality customer care.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Finance, Healthcare Administration, or related field
  • 5 years of progressive experience in pharmacy operations, performance analytics, or pharmacy finance
  • Deep understanding of:
    • Pharmacy reimbursement models
    • Drug pricing and margin dynamics
    • Inventory and purchasing strategies
    • Clinical pharmacy programs (MTM, immunizations)
  • Demonstrated experience working with regulatory and compliance frameworks
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret complex datasets
  • Proven leadership and cross-functional collaboration skills
  • Managerial experience
  • Ability to balance multiple projects and adapt to new issues/assignments
  • Valid driver’s license

Preferred Requirements:

  • MBA or advanced degree
  • Experience in multi-site or enterprise pharmacy operations
  • Familiarity with pharmacy management systems, wholesaler platforms, and PBM data feeds
  • Experience leading performance transformation or margin recovery initiatives

Physical Requirements:

  • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
  • Willing to travel to HomeTown Pharmacy locations.
