Contract Role Overview
We are seeking an experienced
PostgreSQL Database Administrator
to serve as a subject matter expert for our database ecosystems. You will be responsible for the health, performance, and security of our PostgreSQL instances across both on-premises data centers and cloud environments (GCP/Azure). The ideal candidate is a proactive problem-solver who excels at performance tuning, high-availability architecture, and seamless cloud migrations. Key Responsibilities Core Administration:
Lead the installation, configuration, and lifecycle management of PostgreSQL. Manage database refreshes, security patching, and version upgrades to ensure 99.9% uptime. Performance Engineering:
Actively monitor and optimize database performance. You will analyze execution plans, tune postgresql.conf parameters, and manage indexing strategies to resolve bottlenecks. High Availability:
Design and maintain robust HA clusters using
repmgr . Take ownership of failover testing, node recovery, and split-brain prevention. Cloud & Migration:
Design and execute low-downtime migration strategies from legacy on-premises hardware to Cloud SQL or Azure Database for PostgreSQL. Data Protection:
Oversee comprehensive Backup & Recovery (PITR) and Disaster Recovery (DR) strategies using both native tools and enterprise solutions. Replication Management:
Configure and troubleshoot streaming and logical replication to support data synchronization and reporting offloads. Technical Qualifications Postgres Internals:
Deep understanding of WAL (Write-Ahead Logging), MVCC, Autovacuum tuning, and memory architecture ($shared\_buffers$, $work\_mem$). Clustering:
Proven hands-on experience with
repmgr
for automated failover and cluster management. Tooling:
Proficiency with standard tools like pg_dump, pg_restore, pg_basebackup, and pg_upgrade. Cloud Platforms:
Working knowledge of
GCP (Google Cloud Platform)
or
Microsoft Azure
database services. Infrastructure as Code:
(Preferred) Experience automating deployments with
Ansible
or
Terraform . Observability:
Familiarity with monitoring stacks such as Prometheus, Grafana, or pgAdmin
