Position Summary We have an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Senior Director of the Perlmutter Cancer Center Research Administration. This role reports to the Executive Director, PCC Administration, and is responsible for providing leadership and overall administrative direction to the research administration of the Laura and Isaac Perlmutter Cancer Center, a joint program of NYU Grossman School of Medicine and NYU Langone Hospitals. The Senior Director directs all operational activities of the PCC research programs, including staffing, systems and budgets, philanthropy, management of non‑physician/scientist staff, and facilitation of recruitment of scientific and administrative staff. The role fosters effective relationships with departments throughout NYU GSOM and NYU LH, as well as external agencies, the PCC External Scientific Advisory Committee and PCC Board.
Job Responsibilities
DEVELOPMENT OF GOALS: Guides activities and ensures that the Cancer Center responds to the needs of NYUGSOM and NYULH by adhering to goals/objectives for GSOM programs. Provides leadership support in achieving and maintaining NCI cancer center designation. Helps the leadership enhance the cancer center in efforts to maintain comprehensive designation. Prepares verbal or written reports to various services and administrative offices on status of and/or changes to objectives and initiatives of the research administration.
GRANTS MANAGEMENT: Oversees reporting and compliance with regulatory agencies for all grants within the Cancer Center, including the Cancer Center Support Grant (CCSG). Ensures that principal investigators are kept aware of reporting and regulatory requirements. Works with the Office of Grants Administration to ensure effective grant transition services for new faculty and identification of new proposals. Oversees the enhancement of information systems to support financial, regulatory and funding agency requests for data. Oversees the development and ongoing coordination of the CCSG and its corresponding laboratory budgets. Ensures appropriate allocation of expenses based on regulatory guidelines. Negotiates terms beneficial to the PCC with outside regulatory agencies.
TECHNOLOGY TRANSFER: Monitors technology transfer and clinical trials management initiated/performed within the PCC; assists investigators in the development of appropriate opportunities for commercially sponsored research.
PHILANTHROPY: Promotes a general awareness of the efforts of the PCC to foster increased philanthropy from potential donors. Jointly with the Vice Dean for Development and the Executive Director, PCC Administration, oversees the work of the personnel dedicated to fund development for the PCC. Provides reports to donors as needed.
COMMUNITY OUTREACH: Develops programs that foster an awareness of the efforts of the PCC in the community. Oversees the development of materials intended to educate the general population about cancer prevention and awareness and services available at the PCC.
FACULTY RECRUITMENT: In conjunction with the Director, PCC, the Executive Director, PCC Administration, and relevant Department Chairs, develops and implements strategic plans for recruitment of research faculty. Develops relevant business plans for review and approval by the Director, PCC, Executive Director, PCC Administration, the Vice Dean(s) and the Chief Medical Officer. Initiates development of term sheets and offer letters for research faculty. Coordinates with NYUGSOM and NYULH regarding resources for recruits, including space and equipment. Ensures all necessary paperwork is completed and guidelines followed.
EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION MANAGEMENT: Notifies research faculty of relevant PCC, NYUGSOM and NYULH events, programs and policies. Communicates new policies and procedures and applicable regulatory changes to all research staff. Establishes mechanisms and processes that facilitate compliance and assists in reinforcing policy changes and regulatory requirements.
RESEARCH PROGRAMS: Coordinates with Hospital Section Chiefs in the development of cancer‑related clinical research programs. Identifies appropriate resources needed to address tasks and gather data. Facilitates PCC review of cancer‑related grant applications and manuscripts prior to submission.
FACILITIES MANAGEMENT: Oversees strategic development of facilities planning for PCC research areas, assessing needs against short‑ and long‑term goals. Coordinates all major research‑related construction and renovation projects with Real Estate Development + Facilities within PCC, ensuring commitments are honored. Coordinates negotiation of capital equipment for research areas and provides appropriate analysis, projections and financial documentation.
MANAGEMENT OF STAFF: Develops staffing plans and ensures position descriptions and performance standards are established. Ensures administrative infrastructure supports clinical research and multi‑disciplinary programs. Implements performance management guidelines and reward and disciplinary processes in accordance with NYUGSOM and NYULH guidelines.
CLINICAL RESEARCH MANAGEMENT (Clinical Trials): Provides oversight and administrative direction for all clinical research activity and compliance. Directs pre‑ and post‑award administrative support and financial management of all federal, industry and foundation clinical research projects. Supports negotiation of rates, cost allocation and study‑specific budgets with industry sponsors. Oversees IRB compliance and organizes industry site monitoring for active recruitment of clinical trials. Provides leadership in quality performance by establishing systems to improve efficiency and customer satisfaction.
FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT: Coordinates preparation of PCC budgets for NYUGSOM and monitors financial performance. Determines changes needed to address variances. Oversees development of business plans for all research programs. Manages grant and contract funding. Develops strategies for cost containment and revenue maximization. Ensures charges are authorized and approved by the appropriate investigator. Prepares variance reports outlining deviations from the approved budget.
POLICY AND PROCEDURE DEVELOPMENT: Provides administrative support to the Director, PCC in the development and implementation of policies and procedures. Ensures compliance with regulatory agencies and communicates any changes to all staff.
PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT: Works with the Director of the PCC and the Executive Director, PCC Administration to facilitate new programs and plans. Develops and implements newly approved programs. Fosters a multidisciplinary approach to programmatic efforts to generate revenue, increase community awareness, and enhance the stature of the PCC.
Minimum Qualifications To qualify, you must have a Master’s degree in Business, Health Administration or a related field and a minimum of five years of progressively increasing leadership experience within a peer‑reviewed Cancer Center or major academic healthcare institution, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. You should possess a solid foundation in general management and demonstrated ability to build teams and translate strategic ideas into operational programs. Demonstrated skill in oversight and operations of clinical trials, prior strong experience with grant management, and senior cooperation with the NIH/NCI and other granting agencies is required. Excellent communication skills are essential for interfacing with diverse internal and external professional groups and committees. You must be comfortable interacting with Board members, potential donors, physicians, scientists and other colleagues, and be able to work in a complex matrix setting, build consensus, and develop innovative problem‑solving approaches.
