Overview Join to apply for the Log Quality & Marketing Forester role at Manulife Responsible for the log quality and marketing program for Manulife Forest Management in the Western Washington Region (WEWA) covering client-managed properties totaling over 250,000 acres and across diverse markets from the Canadian border south into Northwestern Oregon. This key role reports to the WEWA Region Manager and requires regular communication and coordination with WEWA team members and the many mill customers across the Region. Responsibilities Consult regularly with the Region Manager, Harvest Area Managers, and mill customers to understand current log specifications, pricing, production costs, and manufacturing to develop quarterly (or similar) log sale packages and marketing strategies that maximize client revenue from log sales. Work closely with Harvest Area Managers, harvest operations foresters and logging contractors to ensure proper merchandizing and sorting on the landing to achieve optimal volume and value recovery. Work closely with harvest operations foresters and logging contractors to meet log quality and delivery commitments to mill customers to be a preferred supplier. Develop strong working relationships with mill customers. Regularly visit with all mill customers (procurement managers and foresters) to gain insight into log yard procedures, current customer needs, and feedback on delivery performance. Communicate this feedback to our harvest operations foresters and logging contractors. Understand scaling rules and perform regular mill checks and coordinate with contracted third-party check scalers to ensure accurate scale from mill customers. Work safely and collaborate with the rest of the MFM team to create a safe work environment for all. Support the implementation of the HFM NA stewardship program to meet or exceed all SFI requirements. Track key market information and collaborate with the Region Manager and other MFM/MIMTA teams to provide log pricing projections and local market insights for the purpose of preparing quarterly reports, updating long-term plans, and conducting economic research and analysis. Regularly engage with and share market information with the Western Oregon and Inland Log Marketing Managers to be aware of broader market trends and log marketing strategies. Support timberland acquisition and disposition efforts as needed. Qualifications A Bachelor’s degree in Forestry or a closely related field Minimum of 10 years’ experience in forest operations and marketing is desired Knowledgeable in areas of log markets, product specifications, merchandizing, and contract administration Excellent oral and written communication skills and listening skills Must be a strong, collaborative team player and leader and able to effectively work with diverse personalities Demonstrated analytical skills and proficient using Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, Powerpoint, and ArcGIS Professional (ArcPro) Highly motivated and entrepreneurial Must work independently and travel to remote destinations Customer-service oriented About Manulife And John Hancock Manulife Financial Corporation is a leading international financial services provider, helping people make their decisions easier and lives better.
