Summary
The Issue Developer of the print and online versions of The Herald of Christian Science is responsible for planning and producing the monthly Herald magazine in French. The Issue Developer may also be the Staff Editor in French, and as such reviews, grades, edits, and communicates with authors and verifiers for all submissions to JSH in French.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Determines all print and web content to be approved by the Associate Editor supervising the Herald.
Is familiar with all JSH editorial assets and puts together weekly online content and a monthly magazine that meets the specific prayer needs of readers in the French field.
Coordinates the workflow of each piece to be published in the magazine and online.
Inputs all articles into the content management system (K4).
Assists the Designer and the Web team by ensuring that the art, design, layouts, and format work harmoniously with the text and are culturally sensitive.
Sends pieces for translation selected weekly from the Journal, Sentinel, Herald, and related sources.
Manages the translation team for all translations, reviews, proofing, and copyediting, and reads and approves final copy in French.
As a Staff Editor, reviews, grades, and edits French submissions, working with other Staff Editors when needed.
Manages translation of French submissions into English for editing.
Manages translation of the edits made in English back into French.
Communicates with authors during the editing process and has them approve their edited pieces in French.
Communicates directly with authors about revisions to their pieces.
As a Staff Editor, manages the collection of verifications for pieces originally published in French.
May record testimonies in French and transcribe or send recorded testimonies for transcription, or facilitate this process.
Translates into English letters and comments from the field and responds to the sender. If necessary, works together with the Associate Editor (and sometimes Product Manager and other related parties) to draft a response in English to be translated and sent in French.
Develops themes, curates content around this theme and provides copy for the French Herald homepage on JSH-Online.
Determines content for the weekly newsletter.
Is responsible for meeting all deadlines.
Coordinates with the JSH audio team, web team, and BMPS.
Reviews and approves audio pieces in French.
Occasionally records audio programs/podcasts in English and/or French.
Communicates with the field and individuals to encourage submissions of articles and testimonies (written or audio).
Is a member of the Translation Group at The Mother Church.
Other projects, as assigned by management.
Staff Management and Job Contacts
Reporting Relationships: Supervisor: Associate Editor
Managing Relationships: Coordinates the work of 3-8 individuals on the French translation team.
Job Requirements
Education / Experience
This position requires familiarity with the Herald fields and fluency in French. A Bachelor’s degree, or the equivalent in experience, is required. Three to seven years of professional experience in project management, production, and editing, or an equivalent experience in a comparable field is required.
Knowledge / Skills
The issue developer must be deeply familiar with the Bible and Mrs. Eddy’s writings.
The individual must be aware of political, cultural, and social developments in the countries served by the French Herald, as well as the needs and interests of its readers.
Technology Skills
Ability to work in Google Drive, Microsoft Office, K4 content management system, Trello, Adobe, and other platforms as needed.
Work Environment
This position regularly works in an office environment at The Mother Church in Boston, MA.
Christian Science Information
Membership in The Mother Church and Primary Class instruction required. Branch church membership and/or active participation in the public practice of Christian Science desirable.
Pay Range
$87,428 - $113,655.80 annually
The pay ranges disclosed in our job postings are the compensation ranges the Church reasonably and in good faith expects to pay for a given position at the time of posting.
The offered salary will be determined by factors such as the applicant’s relevant education, experience, knowledge, skills, abilities, benchmarking, work location, and internal equity.
