Underwater Acoustic Systems Scientist - Sonar & Subsea Communications Engineering Join our innovative Sensing and Communications Department as a Research Scientist specializing in underwater acoustic systems, sonar signal processing, and subsea communications technology. Key Responsibilities Design and develop advanced undersea acoustic communication systems and sonar signal processing solutions
Lead and support research and development programs focused on innovative maritime systems and autonomous underwater vehicles
Collaborate with cross‑functional engineering teams to solve complex system design challenges for subsea technology applications
Conduct first‑principle analysis, prototyping, and testing of integrated acoustic systems
Plan and execute at‑sea experiments and field testing of underwater communication systems
Partner with subject matter experts across the organization to develop next‑generation naval technologies
Contribute technical expertise throughout the complete product lifecycle from concept to deployment
Prepare technical documentation, presentations, and reports for project stakeholders and customers
Required Qualifications MS or PhD in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Ocean Engineering, Applied Physics, Applied Mathematics, or related technical discipline
Demonstrated experience with acoustic communication system design or underwater acoustic applications
Working knowledge of digital and analog circuit design and electronics systems
Strong foundation in fundamental physics and mathematics principles with proven application to complex problems
Proven ability to contribute to and lead complex technical projects at a detailed level
Experience collaborating with senior technical staff to develop innovative technology solutions that meet customer requirements
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with ability to interface effectively with project managers, integrated product team (IPT) leads, and government customers
U.S. citizenship or eligibility for security clearance (typically required for defense‑related positions)
Preferred Qualifications Experience managing multidisciplinary technical programs including scheduling, budgeting, resource coordination, and deliverable accountability
Background in U.S. Navy undersea warfare operations, submarine systems, or naval technology programs
Track record leading programs through various technology readiness levels (TRL) from science and technology through deployment
Hands‑on experience designing complex undersea systems including custom PCB development, embedded software, data acquisition systems, and real‑time signal processing
One or more years developing wireless or underwater communications systems
Familiarity with sonar systems, autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs), or unmanned maritime systems
Knowledge of Navy technologies, operations, and maritime domain awareness
Experience with MATLAB, Python, C/C++, or other technical computing environments
