Overview

The Opportunity:

Are you a Senior Database Administrator with deep expertise in Snowflake and Azure Cloud? Join Multnomah County as a Senior Database Administrator (DBA) to lead our transition from on-premise servers to a modern cloud architecture. We are seeking a technical lead to ensure our data systems are secure, optimized, and ready for the future. Please read the Minimum Qualifications for all of the requirements for this position.

In this role, you will:

Keep things running: you will manage our databases every day, ensuring space and correct setup for the team.

Lead our move to the cloud: you’ll help redesign data storage, shifting from on-site setups to modern cloud technology like Azure, Google GCP, and AWS.

Protect our data: design backup plans and ensure rapid recovery if needed.

Fix and improve: identify bottlenecks and optimize performance.

Draw the blueprints: create data models showing how information fits together.

Help the team: mentor IT staff, solve tricky coding problems, and teach new database tools.

Stay updated: keep software current with updates and patches and learn about new tech trends.

The Team:

You will join the IT Division within the Department of County Assets (DCA). Led by IT Manager Michelle Smith, the team focuses on providing technical support to keep the County moving. We are undergoing a shift to cloud-based tools and seek someone excited about this evolution.

To Qualify

Minimum Qualifications/Transferable Skills:

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent years of experience will be considered.

5 years of experience in IT development and database administration (Equivalency: 9 years of qualifying training and/or experience).

This position requires specialized knowledge. Demonstrate KSAs listed below.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs):

Advanced knowledge of Azure Cloud services (Azure SQL Managed Instance, Azure SQL Database, Azure Data Lake, Azure Data Factory, Azure DevOps, Azure Boards, etc.).

Working knowledge of Snowflake.

Advanced knowledge of BI Data Marts and Data Warehousing, including design and best practices.

Experience working with developers to build ETLs for reporting.

Advanced knowledge of database logging tools (e.g., Idera, RedGate Monitor, Splunk).

Working knowledge of BI reporting platforms (Tableau, Tableau Server, Power BI, Power BI Report Server, SSRS).

Advanced knowledge of installing, tuning, maintaining, securing, and administering an on-prem MS SQL Server database and cloud environments.

Working knowledge of MS SSIS environment installations and maintenance.

Working knowledge of security, authorization, and authentication in Microsoft Active Directory and Azure Entra ID.

Working knowledge of MS SQL Server and Azure cloud backup and recovery design and implementation.

Basic knowledge of networking, firewall concepts, and Windows Server administration.

Basic knowledge of SAN/NAS storage, virtualization (Hyper-V/VMWare), and high availability technologies.

Advanced knowledge of RDBMS management tools (MS SQL Server Management Studio).

Working knowledge of SQL Server development (T-SQL) including stored procedures, queries, functions, views, indexes, and triggers.

Working knowledge of database modeling, data conversion, and ETL tools (e.g., SSIS).

Basic knowledge of administrative scripting (C#, WMI, PowerShell, Rs Utility, MSBuild).

Ability to pass a criminal records check.

Type of Position:

Hourly, AFSCME Local 88 union-represented, overtime eligible.

Work Location:

Multnomah Building, 501 SE Hawthorne Blvd., Portland, OR 97214.

Telework Schedule:

Routine Telework; primarily from home with required onsite meetings.

Residency: All employees must reside in Oregon or Washington.
