Job Description The Vermilion Local School District seeks a talented educator and leader to fill the position of Director of Special Education and join our staff in helping every child succeed today, tomorrow and beyond.
Proven special education leadership, along with great communication skills and a strong commitment to student learning are the foremost criteria we will use to evaluate candidates. Special Education licensure and Principal or Superintendent licensure are preferred.

DIRECTOR OF SPECIAL EDUCATION
Administrative Position
Terms of Employment: 209 days per school calendar year Reports to: Superintendent
Purpose Statement: The Director of Pupil Services directs the planning, delivery, assessment and ongoing improvement of the pupil services program, and coordinates the delivery of special education services deemed essential by participating school districts.
Qualifications:
Master’s Degree and current Ohio Principal or Superintendent licensure.
Must possess a valid Ohio Department of Education license appropriate for the position.
A minimum of five (5) years of successful teaching and administrative experience.
Experience with special needs populations is required.
Must possess a valid Ohio driver’s license.
Successfully passes a BCI and FBI background check.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Directs pupil services programs and special education programs. Articulates a clear philosophy and shared vision of learning. Promotes close working relationships with all stakeholders.
Participates as an active member of the management team. Upholds board policies and follows administrative guidelines/procedures. Promotes a professional image of the school district.
Maintains open and effective communications. Promotes the district’s commitment, vision and values. Serves as an information resource. Keeps stakeholders informed about emerging issues.
Plans, procures and manages supplemental service contracts related to assigned programs.
Prepares office financial data for the district budget.
Coordinates student placements; attends out-of-district ETR/IEP meetings.
Facilitates the coordination of “child find” and preschool/kindergarten screening programs.
Oversees IDEA Part-B applications and program reporting requirements.
Encourages program innovations; pursues funding opportunities; implements funded proposals and complies with reporting requirements.
Promotes professionalism; implements state mandated and locally developed personnel appraisal standards.
Mandates court-placed students, foster care, etc.
Provides guidance, communicates expectations, and shows an active interest in student progress.
Monitors education laws, rules and regulations. Recommends administrative procedures that facilitate compliance with legal mandates. Participates in due process procedures as requested.
Upholds the student conduct code; maintains high expectations for behavior and performance; helps with pupil management issues.
Promotes a safe, efficient and effective work/learning environment. Monitors safety concerns; works with stakeholders to manage or eliminate risk factors.
Upholds applicable local, state and federal laws; initiates referrals to community resources as needed; serves as a school contact for service providers.
Supervises collection, verification and recording of special education program information as directed.
Manages the accurate and timely completion of special education reports, records and inventories.
Respects personal privacy; maintains confidentiality of privileged information.
Reports suspected child abuse and/or neglect to civil authorities as required by law.
Encourages parent organizations and supports school-sponsored activities.
Pursues growth opportunities that enhance professional performance and advance district goals.
Strives to develop rapport and serves as a positive role model for others.
Maintains a professional appearance; wears work attire appropriate for the position.
Performs other specific job-related duties as directed for the effective and efficient operation of district activities.
The employee shall remain free of any alcohol or non-prescribed controlled substance abuse in the workplace throughout his/her employment in the district.
Knowledge, Skills and Ability:
Strong ability to organize, prioritize, work under time constraints and to be flexible in an environment of multiple tasks and changing priorities.
Outstanding facilitative, computer, oral and written communication skills; ability to prepare clear and concise reports, incorporating quantitative data and analysis; ability to deliver presentations to any audience, including district leadership, board members or news channels; ability to be a team player and willingness to take initiative; ability to adapt communication style for varying audiences.
Exhibit interpersonal skills to relate well across a variety of multi-cultural audiences including students, staff, administration, parents and community.
Must have excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communications skills and proficiency with current technology; ability to communicate confidentially; possess excellent leadership skills and teamwork.
Evaluation: Evaluation will be completed on an annual basis.
