Job Summary The Commercial Credit Underwriter (1mm-10mm commitments) is an individual contributor experienced in gathering, analyzing, and interpreting various types of credit information on existing and prospective customers to determine credit worthiness. While under the supervision of Underwriting Team Leaders, the Underwriter assists in structuring new requests for extensions of credit, completing extensions and renewals, and making recommendations for deteriorating credits while independently managing workflow and communication with field partners. The Underwriter is responsible for assessing risk, recommending client credit solutions to maintain the bank's asset quality, and ensuring compliance with credit policy and guidelines. They make loan decisions within an assigned lending authority and provide well‑thought‑out recommendations when higher‑level approval is needed.

Essential Functions

Evaluate loan requests to identify purpose, risk elements, and collateral adequacy.

Assess liquidity, management quality, market position, industry, and overall business climate to estimate future profitability.

Analyze credit data, financial statements (cash flow, balance sheet, income statements), and tax returns to determine creditworthiness and risk level.

Apply accounting principles to financial modeling.

Interpret risk rating model output and client data to develop a credit recommendation.

Develop credit write‑up and make loan structuring decisions within delegated authority or recommend to Credit partners/Officers; document and communicate findings.

Identify deteriorating credits early and escalate with structured recommendations for restructure.

Initiate annual reviews.

Review loan documentation to ensure alignment with terms and conditions outlined in the credit approval.

Create and maintain credit files; develop spreadsheets based on financial statements for foundational underwriting analysis.

Track client data, document tracking, reports, covenant compliance, trends, and dashboards.

Provide financial analysis and portfolio administration for accurate risk ratings.

Prepare loan packages and monitor loan portfolios.

Mentor, coach, and train Credit Analysts.

Collaborate with bankers and credit partners to improve credit process efficiency and effectiveness.

Participate in periodic projects related to risk management process changes, policy updates, or underwriting process improvement.

Perform other duties as assigned; responsibilities may change without notice.

Education

Bachelor's Degree or equivalent work experience in finance, accounting, economics, and/or business (required).

Work Experience

Minimum of 2 years in commercial/specialty client underwriting, credit, banking, and/or financial services (required).

Competent with Microsoft Office and able to learn and use other technology applications (required).

Understanding of financial models (required).

Ability to gather relevant research, analyze data, and synthesize large amounts of information to assess commercial creditworthiness and create thorough underwriting packages (required).

Demonstrated understanding of commercial credit underwriting/approval methodologies, credit policies, and procedures (required).

Strong presentation and communication skills, with the ability to collaborate and make an impact (required).

Ability to plan, multi‑task, manage time effectively, and work independently with limited supervision of senior team members (required).

Interpret financial statements (balance sheets, income statements, cash flow statements) and use ratios to evaluate borrower financial strength (experienced level).

Evaluate and interpret information, question assumptions, and support evidence‑based conclusions (experienced level).

Physical Demands General office work – prolonged sitting, frequent use of PC/laptop, occasional lifting/pushing/pulling of equipment up to 10 lbs. Requires face‑to‑face communication with teammates and clients.

Travel Occasional travel, including overnight stays.

Work Location Category Hybrid (3+ days onsite).

Compensation And Benefits This position is eligible to earn a base salary in the range of $63,000.00–$96,000.00 annually. Placement within the range may vary based on skills, experience, and geographic location. Compensation also includes eligibility for incentive compensation (production, commission, and/or discretionary incentives).
