Position Under general supervision, the

Senior Phlebotomist

will be responsible for performing a wide range of laboratory duties, including specimen collection, waived and moderate testing (including microscopy), and EKGs. The Senior Phlebotomist will have a strong background in phlebotomy, laboratory procedures, and patient care. This position requires excellent attention to detail, accuracy, and organizational skills. The Senior Phlebotomist will work independently and as part of a team to ensure the delivery of high-quality patient care.

Schedule and Location

Schedule:

This position is a 40-hour work week. The office operates 7 days a week; this position is Monday through Friday from 9:30 am to 6:30 pm.

Note:

Schedule may include holiday rotations. Hours may fluctuate based on business needs. Final scheduling will be determined by the hiring manager.

Primary Responsibilities

Venipuncture and specimen collection: collect blood specimens from patients using venipuncture and capillary puncture techniques; maintain a clean, safe, and efficient work environment; process and prepare specimens for testing and transport; troubleshoot issues related to specimen collection, testing, and equipment; provide patient instructions for collection and post-collection care; dispose of bio-hazardous and sharps materials; obtain specimens for microbiology testing; perform EKGs and other services; manage supplies and rotate stock; follow venipuncture and processing standards of work (SOW) including positive patient identification.

Perform waived and moderate complexity laboratory testing: conduct waived and moderate complexity testing (including microscopy); maintain accurate records of patient information, test results, and procedures; perform quality control and calibration; participate in quality assurance activities and proficiency testing; follow clinic lab procedures and guidelines.

Customer experience: interact with patients and healthcare providers professionally and compassionately; follow reception standards of work; solve problems efficiently; locate missing orders and specimens; maintain competent phone skills.

Duties integrated into all job functions: promote a positive work environment; relate well with coworkers and patients; support core values; apply Lean principles to improve efficiency; follow instructions; complete required compliance training (HIPAA/privacy/confidentiality/non-discrimination/harassment/integrity statements) and ensure patient information confidentiality; attend required trainings and maintain regular attendance.

Required Qualifications

High School Diploma/GED (or higher).

Medical Assistant-Phlebotomist (MA-Pbt) certification from the state of Washington to perform capillary and venous procedures under supervision.

Completion of a Phlebotomy Certificate program through an accredited school.

BLS (AHA) certification or ability to obtain within 30 days of employment.

Intermediate proficiency with Microsoft Office and solid computer skills.

Ability to lift up to 50 pounds occasionally and 24 pounds regularly; must have reliable transportation to travel to other draw stations.

Ability to adhere to Optum/UHG code of conduct and related policies.

Preferred Qualifications

2+ years of blood draw experience and knowledge of laboratory information systems and EMR.

Experience performing EKGs and interpreting readings.

Knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, and CLIA regulations.

Demonstrated organizational, time management, and attention to detail; ability to work with diverse patient populations.

Understanding of HIPAA and compliance standards.
