Overview
The Ulster County Public Defender’s Office ensures that the constitutional right to counsel is a reality for eligible individuals, regardless of income. We represent clients in criminal, Family Court, and appellate matters when liberty, family integrity, and due process are at stake. Our office is built around a multidisciplinary model, with attorneys, investigators, case managers, and support staff working collaboratively to address both the legal and practical challenges our clients face. The Role
This is a part-time, off-site position based in Kingston, New York. Assistant Public Defenders
in our office handle
serious criminal matters , including felony cases, and are expected to take ownership of their work from arraignment through disposition and, where appropriate, trial. Responsibilities include: Representing clients in criminal proceedings, including hearings and trials Conducting legal research and motion practice Advising clients on legal rights, strategy, and collateral consequences Negotiating dispositions where appropriate Working closely with investigators and interdisciplinary team members Attorneys are given
meaningful courtroom responsibility
and are expected to exercise
independent judgment
in managing their cases. What We’re Looking For
This position is best suited for attorneys who: Have experience in criminal defense, particularly felony-level work, or are prepared to step into that role Are comfortable appearing in court and handling contested proceedings Can build trust with clients in difficult and often high-stakes circumstances Exercise sound judgment and take ownership of their cases Value preparation, thoughtful advocacy, and ethical clarity This is a collaborative office, but it is not a role for those looking to avoid responsibility or courtroom engagement. Qualifications
Juris Doctor (JD) and admission to practice in New York Experience in criminal law and courtroom advocacy Strong research, writing, and communication skills Demonstrated commitment to client-centered representation Location
