Recreational Program Assistant
Under limited supervision, plans, leads, and conducts activities in youth and adult programs and lessons, assist with scheduling and supervision of City facilities, and directs the work of volunteer staff; performs related duties, as required. Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to the following: Assist the Recreation Specialist and/or Coordinator in organizing, planning, implementing, supervising, and evaluating various recreation activities, including youth programs (summer camp and preschool), youth and adult sports, youth and adult swim lessons, youth and adult classes, and special events. Assist with direction and supervision of volunteers. Plan, coordinate, and administer the overall scheduling of activities within the program. Assist public at the counter/front desk, answer phone calls, and provide general customer service. Take program registrations, cashiering functions, report preparation, monitor and maintain facilities, and assist with the operation of multiple recreational programs and special events. Provide training and work direction to teacher aides, substitutes, and volunteers. Maintain and supervise an inventory of equipment and supplies. Attend staff meetings and community interest group meetings as assigned. Serve as a source of information for the public regarding all recreation programs. Aquatics Assignment: Conduct group and individual swim lessons. Supervise pool operations and perform lifeguard rescue techniques if necessary. Youth Program Assignment: Assistant Preschool Teacher to assist with development and implementation of age-appropriate lesson plans and supervise children in the classroom. Sports Assignment: Assist with the development and supervision of teams, coaches, schedules, and daily operations of sports including but not limited to basketball, soccer, volleyball, and tee ball. Minimum Qualifications: Education, Training and Experience Guidelines: Aquatics: must be 15 years of age upon hire and provide a work permit, if applicable with previous work experience in recreation program preferred Youth Programs (preschool): must have High school diploma OR equivalent AND some experience working with children ages 2 to 5 years. License and Certification Requirements: Aquatics: Certifications in Lifeguarding, First Aid, and CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer issued by the American Red Cross, American Heart Association, YMCA, or an equivalent organization. Youth Programs (Preschool): Certifications in CPR and First Aid are required within 90 days of employment. Knowledge of: City policies and procedures. Principles and practices of planning, directing, and teaching recreational programs. Principles and practices of early childhood development instruction. Principles and practices of preventive lifeguarding and water rescue. Principles and practices of effective employee supervision. Principles and practices of public relations and marketing. Principles and practices of conflict resolution. Skill in: Using initiative, discretion, and judgment within established procedures, guidelines, and rules. Defining problems, establishing facts, and drawing valid conclusions. Managing situations requiring diplomacy, fairness, firmness, and sound judgment. Providing efficient customer service. Communicating effectively, both verbally and in writing. Operating a personal computer and various software applications. Applying safe work practices. Physical Demands & Working Environment: Community Recreation/Preschool: Work is performed both indoors and outdoors, exposing the incumbent to the typical conditions encountered in these environments. Physical demands are moderate and include activities such as sitting, standing, walking, and lifting and moving tables, chairs, and equipment. The incumbent must be able to see and hear within the normal range, with or without correction, and be able to communicate effectively both verbally and in written form and must be able to be understood. Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds and possess the stamina to work long hours and overtime if assigned. The incumbent must also be willing to work an irregular schedule, including weekends, holidays, evenings, and/or varying shifts, and respond to emergencies outside regular working hours. Aquatics: Work is performed outdoors, exposing the incumbent to the typical conditions encountered in this environment. Physical demands are moderate to strenuous and include activities such as standing, stooping, reaching, bending, climbing, lifting, pulling, and swimming while wearing swimwear. The incumbent must be able to see and hear within the normal range, with or without correction, and be able to communicate effectively both verbally and in written form and must be able to be understood. Must be able to lift up to 75 pounds and possess the stamina to work long hours and overtime if assigned. The incumbent must also be willing to work an irregular schedule, including weekends, holidays, evenings, and/or varying shifts, and respond to emergencies after regular working hours.
