Recreation Leader

The Recreation Leader is a seasonal, part-time, entry level position in the Recreation class series. Incumbents are expected to have little to no experience. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Recreation Program Supervisor in a variety of environments such as indoor recreation facilities, outdoor City parks, local field trips, and more. Outdoor activities may involve work in varying weather conditions. Work includes light to moderate physical activity in carrying out assigned recreation program tasks. This position is responsible for ensuring a safe, fun, positive environment and providing excellent customer service to participants and parents and other work as assigned. Facilitate recreation programs and activities including sports, games, arts and crafts, and enrichment programs. Provide guidance and support to participants to ensure safety and positive conduct. Perform initial greetings, check participants in and out, answer program-related questions, and maintain good public relations. Enforce facility and program rules, respond appropriately to emergencies or conflicts, and complete incident reports as needed. Assist office staff in planning and implementing special events and seasonal programs. Set up, take down, and maintain equipment and program areas. Perform related duties in support of recreational programs as assigned. Knowledge of: Working with youth Use good written and verbal skills, using good English and diction. Safe work practices. Customer relations and service skills. Basic safety policies, procedures, and techniques. City's recreation and leisure service programs including and not limited to youth sports and refereeing, public skating, Summer Fun Program, and other holiday recreation programs. Ability to: Communicate effectively with youth, parents, staff, and the public. Maintain a positive and professional attitude. Maintain recreational facilities and equipment in a clean, safe, and secure manner. Understand and carry out oral and written instructions, policies and procedures. Use logical thinking and creative thought processes to develop solutions according to written or oral instructions. Establish and maintain effective working relationships. Act with integrity, ingenuity, and inventiveness in the performance of assigned tasks. Any combination of training and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities are qualifying. A typical way to obtain the requisite knowledge and abilities would be one (1) year of paid or unpaid experience with recreational activities and/or childcare. Must be at least 15 years of age. Minors must obtain work permit through school prior to start date. Obtain First Aid and CPR Certification within 90 days of employment. Training may be offered by the City. Must present negative TB test if working with youth. Incumbents must complete a successful fingerprinting prior to start date. Seasonal/Temporary, part-time. This position is a part-time position that is not represented by any employee group. This position is classified as Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) non-exempt.
