The Middle Georgia Regional Commission is seeking to fill the position of Community Development Specialist Intern. A Community Development Intern is responsible for assisting local governments in areas of community planning, economic development, local laws and ordinances, hazard mitigation, personnel management, environmental issues, transportation, historic preservation, and grant preparation and administration. The Government Services Intern works under the direct supervision of the Director of Planning and Public Administration or the Executive Director. Internships through the Middle Georgia Regional Commission are meant to provide students and recent graduates with valuable learning experiences and opportunities to make professional connections in the workplace. The Community Development Intern will be able to engage in a variety of activities regarding the implementation of planning, community development, and public administration services for cities and counties in Middle Georgia. Internship duties may include work with personnel policies, pay plans, grant and loan applications, special planning projects, economic development, research, field surveys, data collection, data analysis, and participation in local government meetings. This position requires a talented individual who can engage collaboratively with local governments in a professional, resourceful, trustworthy, accountable, efficient, and innovative manner. The ideal candidate will be a team-oriented individual who can engage effectively with coworkers and community members in delivering quality customer service. Candidates should possess a strong vision and a desire to facilitate positive change that moves the region forward. The Community Development Specialist Intern should, at a minimum, possess an undergraduate degree or be actively enrolled in an undergraduate degree program at an accredited college or university. Typical programs of study include Public Administration, Public Policy, Urban Planning or related fields. Summary

The Director of Planning and Public Administration and the Community Development Specialist Intern will meet weekly to identify and select specific projects to be undertaken throughout the internship. Potential types of projects to be included in a more specific scope of work include: Development and maintenance of personnel policies, job descriptions, and pay plans. Research, development, and administration of grant and loan applications to assist in public safety, recreation, infrastructure, and community and economic development. Facilitation and support of various special planning projects, such as housing assessments, economic development strategies, comprehensive plans, pre-disaster mitigation plans, urban redevelopment plans, or transportation plans. Administrative support of local governments, such as budgeting, ordinance drafting, development of local legislation, or preparation of proposals/solicitations for work. Research, field surveys, data collection, and data analysis, to support local government decision-making or respond to public requests for information.
