We’re looking for a Communications Officer 1/2/3 to join our University Police Department. The incumbent performs highly responsible and mentally demanding communications and dispatch duties in support of campus police, security, and emergency response operations. The position serves as a primary point of contact for the public, receiving emergency calls, accidents, complaints, and other service requests, then analysing, prioritising, and dispatching Police Officers and Guards to appropriate locations. The role is responsible for accurately receiving, documenting, and transmitting critical information and instructions, maintaining dispatch logs, monitoring fire and security systems, access control, and CCTV, and coordinating notifications to emergency personnel and medical staff as needed. The incumbent also utilises law‑enforcement computer systems and databases, including maintaining required certifications for terminal operations, and performs assigned duties within the Communications Centre while remaining on post unless properly relieved by a supervisor.
Responsibilities
Receive and transmit clearly and accurately by radio, communication terminal, and telephone.
Legibly and accurately record and maintain the activity / communications log.
Monitor security video display and recording system.
Provide information and directions to visitors, patients, and employees.
Analyse, prioritise, and dispatch Police Officers and Guards to appropriate locations.
Maintain dispatch logs and monitor fire and security systems, access control, and CCTV.
Coordinate notifications to emergency personnel and medical staff as needed.
Utilise law‑enforcement computer systems and databases; maintain required certifications for terminal operations.
Remain on post unless properly relieved by a supervisor.
Minimum Qualifications
Six months of experience in transmitting and receiving messages by radio or administrative services; OR
Six months of training in a business or clerical‑related curriculum; OR
Fifteen semester hours of college training.
Special Requirements
All persons appointed must meet the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) and Louisiana State Police Terminal Operator Certification Program guidelines within six months of employment.
An applicant with a felony conviction or under indictment on a felony charge will be disqualified until relief from the disabilities is granted.
