
INVESTIGATOR, PUBLIC DEFENDER

UNCLASSIFIED POSITION – PUBLIC DEFENDER
Minimum Qualifications: Bachelors Degree in criminology, criminal justice, or a related field. Three years of experience in law enforcement or other investigative fields, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provides requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for the job. Must possess and maintain a valid Georgia driver's license; Georgia POST certification is not required but will be considered. Resumes without photos are welcome.
Specific Knowledge, Skills, or Abilities Must be able to demonstrate proficiency in performing essential functions, learn, comprehend, and apply county or departmental policies, practices, and procedures. Knowledge of federal, state, and local criminal laws, statutes, court rules, presentation, and investigative techniques is required. Knowledge of the metropolitan Atlanta area geography and strong interpersonal and communication skills for interviews, interrogations, and other investigative interactions are essential.
Purpose Of Classification Perform professional investigative work for the Office of the Public Defender to support representation of indigent clients of Fulton County. Provide support, resources, and security to assigned Assistant Public Defenders before, during, and after felony, appeals, and juvenile cases. Investigator, P.D. classification focuses on routine felony and juvenile case investigations.
Essential Functions
Assist assigned Assistant Public Defenders in conducting investigations and preparing cases: review case files, identify investigative tasks, draft and execute court orders, collect, secure, and analyze evidence, ensure chain of custody, use investigative tools, photograph or draw crime scenes, conduct home evaluations, compile witness lists, consult with Defenders, and testify in court.
Identify, locate, serve subpoenas, and ensure court appearances of clients, victims, and witnesses; assist with interviewing and obtaining cooperation; serve as translator for attorneys.
Transport and provide security for attorneys, transport attorneys, clients, social workers, and witnesses as needed.
Provide assistance and advocacy to indigent clients: give information and updates regarding case status and court proceedings; provide referrals and information.
Communicate and collaborate with law enforcement, clients, victims, witnesses, families, judges, attorneys, court personnel, and the public to gather information, coordinate investigative efforts, or raise public awareness.
Prepare, gather, review, compile, and process documents related to investigative activities: incident reports, criminal histories, lab information, statements, footage, medical records; review financial records; draft investigative reports, case summaries, evidence requests, and related documents.
Stay abreast of investigative techniques, crime trends, courtroom procedures; attend seminars, training courses; obtain criminology certifications.
Operate or use equipment, tools, and supplies: motor vehicle, cameras, radios, surveillance equipment, computers, office equipment.
Perform other related duties as required.
