THE POSITION The Public Defender of Solano County invites you to apply for the position of Deputy Public Defender I – IV. The Office is looking for attorneys with a sincere dedication to criminal defense and litigation skills, ranging from law clerks to seasoned attorneys with felony trial experience. The eligible list created through this recruitment will be used to fill part‑time and full‑time regular, limited‑term or extra‑help positions as vacancies occur in the Public Defender’s Office.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS Deputy Public Defender I ($8,164.50 – $9,924.00 /month):
No experience required; however, applicants must demonstrate possession of requisite knowledge and abilities.
Deputy Public Defender II ($11,050.18 – $13,431.65 /month):
A minimum of six months of criminal defense and trial experience as a Deputy Public Defender I or an equivalent, or three years of general legal practice experience.
Deputy Public Defender III ($12,707.78 – $15,446.46 /month):
A minimum of one year of criminal defense and trial experience as a Deputy Public Defender II or an equivalent (total of 1.5 years), or four years of general legal practice experience.
Deputy Public Defender IV ($14,616.85 – $17,766.86 /month):
A minimum of one year of criminal defense and trial experience as a Deputy Public Defender III or an equivalent (total of 2.5 years), or five years of general legal practice experience.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Active membership in the California State Bar Association is required.*
Possession of or ability to obtain a valid Class C California driver’s license may be required.
SELECTION PROCESS 05/16/2024 – 5:00 pm: Deadline to submit application and required documents for first application review.
Based on the application documents, qualified applicants may be invited for further examination and will either be pre‑scheduled by the Department of Human Resources or self‑scheduled. All applicants meeting the minimum qualifications are not guaranteed advancement through any subsequent phase of the examination. Depending on the number of applications, the selection process may include an initial application screening, a mandatory information meeting, a supplemental questionnaire, a written and/or practical exam, an oral board exam, or any combination thereof. Responses to supplemental questions may be used as screening and testing mechanisms and will be treated as test examination responses.
