Introduction The Prince William Health District (PWHD) operates multiple public health programs to protect and improve the health and well‑being of residents in Prince William County, Manassas City, and Manassas Park, a majority‑minority community in Northern Virginia. PWHD is a progressive public health leader that promotes population health, protects public health and the environment, and ensures residents have access to health services and information. Developing a competent public health workforce is integral to PWHD’s mission. This position will plan, implement, and evaluate community‑based population health improvement programs through education, outreach, and engagement. Activities will be conducted via internal collaboration and external partnerships within the Population Health and Disease Prevention Division of PWHD.

About This Role The Community Health Educator supports PWHD’s efforts to develop and implement strategies to improve population health. The position represents the health district at community events, coordinates with other departments and partners to identify and implement outreach and health education through community activities, and reinforces healthful behaviors by working with internal team members, community coalitions, schools, businesses, city leadership, urban designers, and other local organizations.

Key focus areas include health communication, engagement with community partners and coalitions, and accountability to social determinants of health. The role prioritizes population‑health–focused strategies designed to support optimum wellness and a healthy environment for people who live, work, and play in the PWHD community.

Minimum Requirements

High school diploma or G.E.D. and 6 years of related experience with public health and health education.

Preferences

Certified Health Education Specialist Certification.

Ability to problem‑solve, set priorities, and work independently.

Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.

Cultural sensitivity and willingness to work with diverse populations.

Bilingual ability is encouraged.

Core Responsibilities

Convene public health partners, communities, and individuals—especially those most impacted by disparities and inequities—to conduct health assessments and identify health priorities and root causes of health disparities.

Plan, implement, and evaluate community‑based population health improvement programs.

Lead development of internal and external disease prevention and wellness promotion curricula.

Identify, implement and evaluate opportunities to improve health, partner in the formation of healthy activity programs.

Coordinate and schedule program activities with community groups interested in making communities healthier.

Support alliances to broaden the response to health concerns, including attending and conducting meetings and training sessions.

Advance the work of community coalitions and committees to improve community health and promote health throughout PWHD.

Co‑chair community healthcare coalitions, when required.

Establish effective relationships, engage new partners, and facilitate collaboration among multidisciplinary stakeholders and volunteers throughout the PWHD community.

Develop seminars, learning sessions, or other community trainings related to health data, enhancing PWHD’s role as an expert body in public health.

Support the writing, editing, and submission of reports on goals and outcomes.

Verify data for accuracy, identify trends, develop projections, and prepare reports as directed or follow established procedures.

Support the preparation of project and training work plans for PWHD and related agencies.

Serve as a liaison for PWHD and partner agencies on public health matters.

Conduct effective community health assessment and improvement planning processes.

Build effective working relationships, take initiative on projects, and continuously seek new opportunities to improve health.

Perform other duties as required, which may include functions in support of an emergency declaration.

Be comfortable working evenings and weekends on an occasional basis.

Special Requirements

Experience with public health, health education, and community outreach.

Experience with diverse stakeholders is required.

A valid driver’s license with a safe driving record.

Passage of local, state, and federal background checks prior to employment.

Work Schedule The position includes field work requiring a full‑time schedule with variable days and hours to support community engagement activities (e.g., community outreach events, outbreak investigations, community clinical and immunization events, or public health emergency response activities).

Hiring Salary Range $76,069.50–$83,425.80 annually.
