Primary Purpose:

Direct and manage the overall program of extracurricular and intramural athletics for the district. Work to provide each student with the opportunity to participate in an extracurricular athletic activity that teaches physical skills and the principles of good sportsmanship and fair play. Ensure compliance with all state, University Interscholastic League (UIL) and local requirements.

Qualifications Education/Certification:

Bachelor Degree from accredited University

Master’s Degree from accredited University preferred

Valid Texas teaching certificate with physical education endorsement preferred

Experience:

Minimum of five years experience as a classroom teacher and successful head coach

Major Responsibilities and Duties

Directs and manages the district’s athletic programs and facilities.

Establishes physical and academic eligibility requirements for participation in each sport, and verifies each athlete’s eligibility.

Maintains an active program that promotes good sportsmanship and student development.

Obtains and uses evaluative findings (including student achievement data) to gauge athletic program effectiveness and ensure that program renewal is continuous and responsive to student needs.

Plans necessary time, resources and materials to support accomplishments of department goals.

Prepares and approves all interscholastic game schedules.

Arranges transportation, lodging and meals for out-of-town athletic events.

Manages district athletic operations by directing ticket sales, employing game officials and ensuring preparation of facilities.

Oversees the process of cleaning, repairing and storing all equipment.

Coordinates the use of all athletic facilities by non-school groups.

Plans, organizes and supervises all athletic awards programs.

Implements district student management policies, communicates expected student behavior related to athletics and ensures enforcement of student discipline in accordance with Student Code of Conduct and student handbook.

Establishes and maintains open lines of communication by conducting conferences on vital issues with parents, students and staff.

Implements the policies established by federal and state law, State Board of Education rule, University Interscholastic League rules and local board policy in the area of athletics.

Compiles, maintains and presents all physical and computerized reports, records and other documents required.

Administers the athletic budget and ensures that programs are cost effective and funds are managed prudently

Compiles budgets and cost estimates based on documented program needs.

Initiates purchase orders and bids in accordance with budgetary limitations and district policies.

Maintains a current inventory of supplies and equipment and recommends disposal and replacement of equipment when necessary.

Approves and forwards purchase orders for the athletic department to accounting department.

Prepares reviews and revises job descriptions for the athletic department.

Recruits, selects, trains and supervises all athletic department personnel and makes sound recommendations about personnel placement, assignments, retention, discipline and dismissal.

Evaluates job performance of employees to ensure effectiveness.

Develops training options and/or improvement plans for employees to ensure exemplary operation in the area of athletics.

Articulates the district’s mission and goals in the area of athletics to the community and solicits its support in realizing the mission.

Demonstrates awareness of district and community needs and initiates activities to meet those needs.

Uses appropriate and effective techniques to encourage community and parent involvement.

Supports athletic booster club activities.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Ability to communicate effectively (verbal and written); interpret policy, procedures, and data; coordinate district functions; work with frequent interruptions; maintain emotional control under stress.

Supervisory Responsibilities As assigned by the Executive Director for Operation Services and oversees all Athletic Personnel.
