Music Teacher/ Band Director

QUALIFICATIONS:

Must meet the certification requirements for Music Teacher Grades K-12 established by the State of Delaware Department of Education

JOB GOAL To develop in each pupil an appreciation of the art of music as part of general culture; to teach techniques of instrumental music expression; to discover and develop talents of pupils in the field of music; and to develop knowledge and skills in listening to and reading music. The High School Band Director shall be responsible for the recruitment, formation, and management of all instrumental ensembles.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES

Teaches skills in music appreciation, harmony, and explorations in music, and in instrumental music (band, orchestra, instrumental ensembles) in an age appropriate manner. Uses the course of study adopted by the Board of Education and other appropriate learning activities.

Plans a balanced music program and organizes daily class time so that preparation, rehearsal, and instruction can be accomplished within the allotted time.

Provides individual and small-group instruction to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each pupil.

Uses repertoire of all types of music literature, including traditional and contemporary, that are appropriate for the ages and skill levels of pupils.

Controls the storage and use of school-owned property; makes minor adjustments and requests repairs to instruments as required.

Establishes and maintains standards of pupil behavior per LFSD Code of Conduct to provide and orderly, productive environment during classroom instruction, practice, group rehearsals, and music performances.

Evaluates each pupil's musical growth and performance, assessing each individual's contribution to the performance of the group.

Plans, rehearses, and directs pupils in musical programs for school and community.

Selects and requisitions books, musical instruments, and instructional aids; maintains required inventory records.

Communicates with parents and school counselors on pupil progress.

Identifies pupil needs and cooperates with other professional staff members in assessing and helping pupils solve health, attitude, and learning problems.

Cooperates with the school administration in providing musical programs for school productions, graduation ceremonies, and civic functions.

Supervises pupils in out-of-classroom activities as assigned.

Participates in curriculum and other developmental programs.

Participates in faculty committees and sponsorship of pupil activities.

Maintains professional competence through in-service education provided by the district, and in self-selected professional growth activities related to music.

Designs and provides showcases for the LFHS marching band to perform at home/away football games, competitions, parades, and other regional/state/local events.

Formulates and runs a band camp during the summer.

Cooperates with the school administration in providing musical programs for school productions, graduation ceremonies, and civic functions.

Ensures that transportation arrangements for students and equipment are made for band events.

Ensures that adequate chaperones are secured for band events.

Issues band uniforms to all band members, sees that band uniforms are maintained and dry-cleaned.

Ensures that school facilities are locked and alarm is turned on when applicable (weekends and late nights).

Works with band (Boosters) parents on fund-raisers and non-curricular activities.

Prepares band for presentation of winter and spring concerts.

Other duties assigned by the immediate supervisor that pertain to music education.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT Works for ten months per the terms of the Negotiated Agreement. This is an Appendix A position carrying extra responsibilities and time requirements for additional pay.

EVALUATION Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with the provisions of the Board's policy on Evaluation and Department of Education guidelines.

Documentation of Mantoux skin test results for entrance to school system.
