Dorchester Paws, formerly Frances R. Willis SPCA, is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to rescuing and caring for lost, abandoned, and abused animals in Dorchester County, South Carolina. As the only open-admission private shelter in the county, we provide essential food, shelter, and medical care to animals until they find forever homes. In 2025, we cared for over 5,400 cats and dogs and maintained a 91% live release rate, aligning with our commitment to being part of the No Kill Community. Despite limited resources, we strive to deliver the highest quality of care, spaying and neutering thousands of animals annually. Community Engagement Manager

Adoption Supervisor, Adoption Coordinators, Off-Site Coordinator, Event Coordinator, Volunteer Coordinator Status:
Full-time, Exempt, 40-45 hours/week Position Summary The Community Engagement Manager leads the shelter’s outward-facing programs — adoptions, off-site events, volunteer engagement, and community outreach. This position ensures a positive public experience, builds relationships, and drives awareness of the shelter’s mission while maintaining high adoption and volunteer satisfaction rates. Key Responsibilities Supervise adoption and off-site teams to ensure excellent customer service and efficient placement processes. Plan and execute adoption promotions and outreach events in coordination with Development /Marketing. Support the Adoption team in maintaining consistent adoption counseling, policies, and data tracking. Ensure volunteers are effectively integrated into shelter operations and events. Community Events Coordinate community engagement events (e.g., fairs, fundraisers, educational programs). Build partnerships with local businesses, schools, and civic organizations. Collaborate with the development team to coordinate events Handle escalated customer interactions professionally and empathetically. Qualifications 3–5 years of experience in public outreach, adoptions, or volunteer management. Strong interpersonal, communication, and public-speaking skills. Proven success in event planning and team leadership. Experience with shelter software and data tracking is preferred. This is a salaried, exempt position that requires flexibility and commitment beyond a standard work schedule. As a leader in an open-admission animal shelter, the manager is expected to exercise sound judgment, lead by example, and ensure the welfare of animals, staff, volunteers, and the public, especially during times of high intake, staffing shortages, emergencies, or other operational demands. Managers are responsible for achieving departmental outcomes, maintaining compliance with shelter policies and animal welfare standards, and supporting cross-departmental collaboration to uphold the organization’s mission and values. While work hours are typically full-time, duties may include evening, weekend, and holiday coverage as necessary to meet shelter needs.
