A pool of qualified candidates will be established to fill future vacancies as they become available. This is the entry-level classification in the Recreation Services series. Initially, employees work under close supervision while learning the City's recreation programs, activities, facilities, and operational practices. As experience is gained, responsibilities increase and become more independent. Recreation Leader staff are responsible for: Supporting and supervising assigned recreation activities and facilities Assisting with community, recreational, or park programs Providing a safe and welcoming environment for all participants Performing related duties as required As a Recreation Leader, you'll play a key role in creating memorable experiences for our community by assisting park visitors, maintaining park sites, coordinating city events, and facilitating recreation programs and activities. The Recreation and Parks Department is responsible for managing and operating a comprehensive park system, administering services in the Palos Verdes Nature Preserve and coordinating numerous community activities and events. The Recreation and Parks Department oversees departmental administration, recreational facilities, programs and classes, special events, the REACH program serving the needs of the developmentally disabled community, support services, and open space management. EXAMPLES OF TYPICAL FUNCTIONS Responsibilities may vary slightly from site to site, but generally fall within these functions. Management reserves the right to add, modify, change, or rescind work assignments for different positions and to make reasonable accommodations for qualified employees to perform the essential functions of the job. Monitors and ensures the safe use of program facilities, enforcing rules and ordinances as needed. Maintains cleanliness and organization of recreational facilities, storage sites, and work areas; secures equipment and materials at the close of activities. Conducts facility safety checks, opens and closes facilities, and collects entrance fees (if applicable). Responds to patron inquiries and provides assistance as needed. Assists with facility rentals, including setting up and taking down tables, chairs, and equipment and also with planning and executing events and programs Uses facility reservation software to manage bookings and maintain databases. Handles general customer service and administrative tasks, such as answering phones, greeting patrons, processing transactions, data entry, copying, and filing. Develops and distributes program materials, including flyers, calendars, brochures, and registration forms. Manages inventory and orders materials and equipment; tracks and maintains program supplies. Operates gift shop, including processing transactions, documenting sales, and preparing bank deposits. Issues and collects recreation equipment and supplies. Observes and enforces safety protocols, making proper use of safety equipment as required. Provides on-the-job guidance for new employees by demonstrating proper work methods and procedures. Maintains accurate logs and records of work performed, materials used, and program participation. Leads recreation activities and community outings for programs serving adults with special needs. Performs other related duties as assigned. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be equivalent to the completion of the twelfth (12th) grade. Must obtain American Red Cross First Aid Certificate and CPR Certificate for infant, child, and adult within 30 days of employment. This is an at-will, part-time position represented by AFSCME District Council 36. This is a variable hour position with no guarantee of any specific hours, but with a work week limitation of up to 20 hours per week, not to exceed 999 hours in a CalPERS fiscal year. Work hours and shifts vary depending on assignment, which may include early mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays. Location hours may vary seasonally. You must be available to work a minimum of one full weekend per month. On occasion, it may be necessary to attend meetings, trainings or events at other site locations, so you will need to be able to move between sites when needed. Part-time Employee Benefits Effective - January 1, 2025 For more information, please refer to the American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on our City website MEDICAL: Part-time employees who work 1,560 hours in a 12 month period and average 30 hours per week during the City's measurement period will receive an offer of affordable minimum value health insurance as required by law. SICK LEAVE: An eligible employee shall accrue paid sick days at the rate of one (1) hour per every thirty (30) hours worked, beginning at the commencement of employment and will accrue paid sick leave for use beginning on the ninetieth (90th) day of employment. All paid sick leave is capped at eighty (80) hours per calendar year, including if rolled over from the prior year, and has no vested interest or cash value. TUITION REIMBURSEMENT: The City provides a tuition reimbursement program to encourage employees to pursue professional growth and development through accredited academic coursework. The course must be related to work within City government, as agreed upon by the City Manager, and class time must not interfere with the employee's normal duties, unless specifically authorized by the City Manager. The maximum amount of reimbursement in a fiscal year shall not exceed $500 per employee participating in the program. LIFE INSURANCE: Employees are eligible for life insurance on the first of the month following their hire date. The City pays the entire premium on a life insurance policy with a benefit of twice the employee's annual City compensation/salary, up to a maximum benefit of $350,000. SHORT-TERM DISABILITY INSURANCE: All part-time employees are required to participate in the California State Disability Insurance (SDI) program, which provides partial salary replacement benefits when an employee is disabled due to a non-work related illness or injury. The program is funded by employee payroll deductions from the employee's bi-weekly paycheck until a cap established by the State is reached. The benefits and terms are established by the State.
