Primary Purpose of the Organization Intramural and Recreational Services
serves as a vital component of the university community by offering a wide range of facilities, programs, and services designed to promote holistic well‑being and student engagement. Through diverse recreational experiences, fitness opportunities, and wellness initiatives, the department encourages students, faculty, and staff to lead active, balanced lifestyles that contribute to their physical, mental, and social health. By fostering an inclusive and welcoming environment, Campus Recreation not only supports the development of lifelong healthy habits but also creates meaningful opportunities for connection, teamwork, and personal growth that enhance the overall campus experience.
Primary Purpose of the Position The purpose of this position is to enhance student engagement and success through the integration of health and wellness initiatives within the university experience. This role oversees all students' involvement in fitness classes—such as Yoga, Zumba, and Weight Training—while coordinating programs that promote holistic well‑being, retention, and academic persistence. By monitoring student outcomes, identifying at‑risk populations, and providing targeted wellness support, this position ensures that students have equitable access to resources that foster both personal and academic growth. Through strategic scheduling, outreach, and data‑driven programming, the role advances the university's mission of supporting student success and cultivating a thriving, healthy campus community.
This position is funded by non‑state funds and has been designated time‑limited. Continuation of this position is contingent upon the continuing availability of those non‑state funds.
Key Requirements and Responsibilities
Experience supervising fitness employees.
Demonstrated experience developing and delivering fitness programs, preferably on a college campus.
Provides leadership and administrative duties to ensure the successful operation of a comprehensive and diverse fitness program. Increases and diversifies program offerings and participants.
Oversees group exercise, personal and small group training, and custom fitness programs and special events.
Supervises the Fitness Coordinator and part‑time group exercise and personal training staff.
Develops annual goals with appropriate evaluation and assessment metrics to demonstrate progress in areas of responsibility.
Designs and implements a comprehensive group fitness program comprised of both standardized classes (i.e., Les Mills) and instructor‑customized classes.
Develops and implements a comprehensive staff development program for fitness employees.
Collaborates with Student Affairs partners and student groups to provide custom fitness programs and special event programming, particularly to target and engage members of the campus population who are underrepresented.
Responsible for risk management of fitness programs, equipment, and staff. Recommends and develops policies and procedures for fitness programs that promote safety, fiscal responsibility, and participation.
Assists with oversight of fitness budgets and provides accountability for expenditures. Meets or exceeds fitness program annual net profit goals.
Manages assessment and reporting of participation numbers, learning outcomes, and satisfaction for fitness programs.
Ensures the development and implementation of robust marketing for fitness offerings.
Minimum Education And Experience Requirements
Bachelor's degree and at least one (1) year full‑time fitness experience or equivalent, or two (2) year graduate assistant.
Appropriate professional certifications through ACE, AFAA, ACSM, NCSA, or similar.
Experience supervising fitness employees.
Preferred Qualifications
Master's degree.
Extensive experience on a college campus and/or with college‑age clients.
Knowledge of fitness technology, such as virtual fitness, remote streaming capabilities, etc.
