About the Role The Benefits Specialist is responsible for the administration, compliance, and day-to-day execution of employee benefit programs, including health and welfare plans, retirement programs, and leave administration. This role serves as a subject matter expert for benefits operations while partnering closely with HR, Finance, brokers, and external vendors to ensure programs are competitive, compliant, and well-communicated.
Key Responsibilities Benefits Administration
Administer health, welfare, retirement, and leave programs (medical, dental, vision, life, disability, 401(k), etc.)
Manage annual open enrollment planning, execution, and employee support
Serve as primary point of contact for benefit inquiries and issue resolution
Maintain accurate benefits data within HRIS and vendor systems
Partner with brokers and vendors on plan administration, renewals, and escalations
Support benefits renewals, plan changes, and cost modeling
Coordinate vendor communications, file feeds, and eligibility audits
Compliance & Reporting
Support ACA reporting, 5500 filings, nondiscrimination testing, and audit requests
Ensure compliance with ERISA, COBRA, HIPAA, FMLA, and applicable state regulations
Maintain benefits documentation, plan notices, and employee communications
Communication & Education
Develop and maintain benefits communications and educational materials
Support employee education sessions and ongoing benefit awareness
Partner with HR and leadership to improve benefit utilization and understanding
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business, or related field preferred
Minimum of 3 years of experience in benefits administration
Working knowledge of ERISA, ACA, COBRA, FMLA, and benefit compliance
Experience working with brokers, carriers, and third-party administrators
Strong attention to detail, organizational, and communication skills
HRIS experience required; benefits system experience strongly preferred
Physical Requirements
Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds at time.
Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
Prolonged periods sitting, standing, walking, and performing repetitive tasks.
Work Environment May work in various settings at the Maverick Power facilities, in offices, in multiple shops, and in commercial buildings. Maintaining the same position or posture while performing tasks and sitting for prolonged periods.
