About This Position
The Parks and Recreation Department is currently seeking friendly and outgoing individuals who enjoy working in a recreation environment. We have diverse opportunities in community programs, including community centers, sporting environments, teen programming, adaptive recreation, and Mobile Recreation. Staff provide customer service, sports, and educational programs to people of all ages and abilities and work various shifts throughout the entire Parks system.
Sports Complex Assignments Assist with daily operations of sports complexes, providing exceptional guest services to tournament promoters, league participants, and recreation programs. Maintain safe, clean, and presentable sports complexes.
Athletic Field Rover This assignment is a driving position where you travel to multiple parks to monitor athletic fields, help educate park users, and lock parks at closing each evening. Shifts are on weeknights as well as day and evening shifts on weekends. Rovers must be comfortable speaking with individuals, working independently, and predominantly in the evenings.
PHXteens Program Lead teen participants ages 13‑17 by providing various teen‑related recreational programming, events, and field trips at 10 PHXteens sites located in community centers and/or other facilities. This includes program management and daily administrative duties. Candidates must have and maintain a valid AZ Driver's License with a clean driving record. Scheduled hours are Monday‑Friday, some weekends, and holidays with required availability 1:00 PM‑9:00 PM or as scheduled.
Adaptive Recreation This position supports and implements social, recreational, and additional services for individuals with developmental/intellectual disabilities. Staff are responsible for indoor and outdoor activities related to the field. Knowledge and experience with individuals who have intellectual or developmental disabilities is preferred.
Mobile Recreation Unit Programs themed in sports, STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math), music, arts & culture, and gaming for teens and pre‑teens in a park setting. Scheduled hours will be Monday‑Friday, some weekends, and holidays with required availability 2:00 PM‑8:00 PM.
Recreation Center Assignments Support recreation programs within community facilities to assist all ages and abilities. Assignments are described below for each role.
Parks & Recreation Aides:
Entry‑level positions that perform recreation work. General assignments may include cleaning and setting up for special events; performing custodial work such as cleaning restrooms and sweeping floors; providing clerical support; helping with various recreation programs such as arts and crafts, dance classes, social events, group games, and physical and sporting events and instruction; and policing of park grounds.
Recreation Instructors:
Develop, implement, and guide recreation activities and supervise children in sports programs, and/or recreation classes; assist with special events; and plan, schedule, and conduct recreation classes in activities such as arts and crafts, dance, drama, music, sports, and games; may facilitate city‑wide sports leagues and tournaments; oversee leagues or programs; prepare facilities; and monitor activities.
Recreation Leaders:
Perform recreation work in a lead capacity over Recreation Aides, Instructors, and volunteers or in charge of a facility or major program area. Responsible for providing various recreational programming at community centers and/or other facilities, including management of programs and coverage of facilities as required, and ensuring safety of all participants.
Salary Parks & Recreation Aide: $17.30 hourly
Recreation Instructor: $18.16 hourly
Recreation Leader: $19.07 hourly
Benefits These positions are classified as part‑time and are only eligible for earned paid sick time, city training, and free or discounted bus and light rail fares. Incumbents may receive performance evaluations and may be eligible for consideration for performance pay increases.
Minimum Qualifications Recreation Aide
Must be at least 15 years old.
Recreation Instructor
Must have completed the 12th grade.
Recreation Leader
Completion of 60 semester hours of college work and a minimum of one year of recreation experience OR a bachelor’s degree in Recreation, Education, or a related field.
Some positions require a valid driver’s license, and incumbents must be able to pass the Parks Department driver safety‑training course.
In addition to the requirements above, all positions require the following:
Working irregular hours, split shifts, weekends, holidays, and evenings.
These are seasonal/on‑demand part‑time positions based on program offerings; there is no guarantee of minimum hours or shifts.
Positions perform cash handling duties.
Ability to:
Lift 50 pounds for at least 20 feet.
Bend and stoop repeatedly.
Stand for long periods of time.
Work outside in a variety of environmental extremes such as heat, cold, rain, air pollution, and dust for all or a portion of the shift.
Travel between work sites during a scheduled shift may require use of a personal vehicle.
Some positions require the use of personal or City vehicles on City business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid driver’s license, and have a good driving record. Use of a personal vehicle will be prohibited if the employee is not authorized to drive a City vehicle or if the employee does not have personal insurance coverage.
