Posting Summary: The Zander laboratory at the Waksman Institute of Microbiology is looking for an individual to investigate powdery mildew resistance in hemp and optimize a hemp transformation and genome editing platform. The research will involve molecular, genetic and epigenomic techniques to understand the role of transcription factors and epigenome dynamics. The candidate will report directly to the Principal Investigator (PI).

Key Duties & Responsibilities

Conduct grant‑funded research as directed by the PI. This includes genetic, (epi)genomic, proteomic analyses, publication of findings, preliminary data for grant proposals, and presentation at scientific meetings.

Train and oversee undergraduate researchers. Responsibilities include teaching plant genetics, genomics, recombinant DNA techniques, protein biochemistry, data presentation skills, record keeping, and basic laboratory techniques.

Projects completed on time and within budget.

Analyses conducted with standard and specialized methods.

Detailed documentation of procedures and results.

Clear communication of procedures and results.

Independent work, with supervision as needed.

Qualifications Requires a doctorate in plant biochemistry, molecular biology, or an allied field.

In‑depth understanding and hands‑on experience with proteins, nucleic acids, and complexes.

Experience in molecular cloning and sequencing.

Knowledge of genomic tools (sample preparation, data collection, and processing).

Experience handling various genomic datasets.

Effective spoken and written English.

High level of computer literacy.

Ability to navigate complex scientific research and manage a diverse research team, addressing issues through critical analysis and informed recommendations to the PI.

Physical Demands and Work Environment Average to above‑average levels of mobility expected for laboratory environment.
