Job Description Eastern Shore Community College is a member of the Virginia Community College System. The College serves the residents of Accomack County and Northampton County as a two‑year institution of higher learning. Operating under policies established by the State Board for Community Colleges and the Eastern Shore Community College Board, the college is financed primarily with state funds, supplemented by contributions from the two counties and the Eastern Shore Community College Foundation.
This position is open to current Eastern Shore Community College students only.
Eastern Shore Community College is seeking a Digital Accessibility Student Intern to support the college's efforts to improve the accessibility of administrative and operational documents. This position offers hands‑on experience in digital accessibility while contributing to the college's compliance with federal accessibility requirements, including the U.S. Department of Justice's ADA Title II regulations for digital content.
The student intern will work with college staff to review and remediate documents, including Word files, PowerPoint presentations, and Excel spreadsheets. Responsibilities include applying accessibility best practices, ensuring proper document structure (e.g., headings, tables, reading order), and helping create content that is accessible and usable for all students, employees, and community members.
The intern will receive training in accessibility standards, tools, and workflows, and will gain practical experience using both standard software and emerging AI tools to support efficient and accurate document remediation.
Functional Responsibilities
Remediating PDFs, PowerPoints, and other documents for digital accessibility
Researching best practices for digital accessibility
Improving processes
Creating e‑forms
Organizing electronic documents
Assisting others who need help with digital accessibility
Minimum Qualifications
Proficient skills in Microsoft Office applications, including Word, PowerPoint, and Excel
Ability to work using a variety of digital document types and formats
Basic knowledge of document structure, including headings, lists, and tables
Strong attention to detail and ability to follow established guidelines and processes
Ability to learn and apply accessibility best practices (training provided)
Ability to learn AI tools to support document review and remediation
Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple documents and deadlines
Ability to work independently and communicate effectively with staff
Commitment to supporting inclusive and accessible digital environments
