Role Description
The Westerly Sun, a daily news operation covering southwestern Rhode Island and southeastern Connecticut, is seeking a creative and energetic managing editor to take us to the next level. The successful candidate will manage all aspects of our news-gathering operation, including a staff of three reporters and several freelance reporters and photographers.
The ideal candidate will possess exceptional written and oral communication skills, an obsessive attention to detail and organization, a mastery of AP style, the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and a strong willingness to work in a team-focused environment. Our fast-paced newsroom includes a diverse mix of news, sports, features, entertainment and community submissions.
Regular duties will include page design and production using Adobe InDesign and Photoshop, managing the news, photography and sports departments and representing The Sun in the community. Familiarity with Google Business Suite is a must including Gmail, Google Docs and spreadsheets. Special duties include managing team election coverage, special sections and overseeing the departmental budget. This is a great opportunity for someone mid-career who wants to take the next step.
Qualifications
Strong expertise in Content Editing, Proofreading, and Supervision of editorial quality
Skills in Team Management, Leadership, and Collaboration
Proficiency in Digital Publishing, Online Content Management, and curating engaging digital content
Proficiency in Adobe InDesign and Photoshop
Solid understanding of Journalism Standards, Story Development, and News Writing
Exceptional verbal and written communication skills
Experience using content management systems (CMS) and digital analytics tools
Bachelor's degree in Journalism, Communications, or a related discipline
Experience in managing print and digital publications is highly advantageous
