Respiratory Care Technical Director
Job Summary
The technical director supervises and directs the activities of the employees engaged in providing respiratory therapy and pulmonary services to patients; cooperates with the medical staff in developing and providing respiratory therapy and pulmonary function services and training program. She/he is responsible for staffing, coordinating, budgeting, and maintaining a high level of patient care through adequate supervision and continuing education programs.

Responsibilities and Authorities
Supervises and directs the activities of employees engaged in providing respiratory and pulmonary services to patients, maintaining patient care in accordance with physician's orders and hospital policies.
Schedules and assigns work to employees, oversees safe and efficient operation of the department, and checks that all functions are properly performed.
Conducts interviews, selects applicants, and coordinates hiring and payroll placement with personnel department.
Prepares time records and sheets for employees, approving and recording hours worked, paid time off, absences, and sick leave; forwards records to appropriate department.
Maintains and promotes good personal relationships; interprets and applies administrative policy; counsels and disciplines employees, including termination when necessary.
Conducts continuing on‑the‑job training for technicians and assistants; evaluates progress and handles personnel matters such as promotion, merit adjustments, pay increases, and termination.
Participates in in‑service and orientation programs for nursing personnel; cooperates with supervision of in‑service training in developing the scope of respiratory therapy documentation.
Makes equipment and patient rounds; checks and analyzes the type of therapy being administered.
Confers with doctors regarding patient treatment progress; communicates issues with nursing unit and physicians; requests review of prescribed treatment when potential medication compatibility is noted.
Is an active member of the cardiopulmonary team, providing technical assistance and consultation; stays current on cardiopulmonary research and instructs other hospital personnel in techniques, procedures, and equipment use.
Maintains good relations with other departments and medical staff, coordinating activities of assigned employees with the broader medical staff.
Directs and maintains required records, reports, schedules, and logs; keeps CEO & CCO informed of activities, needs, problems, and trends.
Maintains an up‑to‑date log of all patients receiving continuous ventilation, including location and requirements; ensures sufficient cylinder gases are available in case of pipe‑gas system failure.
Maintains work areas and equipment, submits timely work orders for repairs, and ensures proper use and care of equipment and supplies.
Stays current on respiratory therapy trends and evaluates their applicability; maintains a current procedure manual for standardizing techniques and policies; consults medical staff and leadership regarding new practices.
Maintains inventory records of cylinders and bulk gas storage; reorders as needed.
Prepares budget and annual reports related to the respiratory therapy service; adheres to budget limits for staffing and expenditures.
Performs other related administrative and supervisory duties as appropriate.
Qualifications
Education and formal training: Minimum of 2 years of college training in an AMA approved respiratory care program and clinical training in an affiliated hospital leading to certification as a CRT or RRT. Must have successfully passed the NBRC examination for registry of certification. PCTD must hold a state license/credential to practice respiratory care from Arkansas State Medical Board.
Experience required: At least 2 years of experience in respiratory care.
Experience desired: Supervisor experience, but the CEO or CCO may authorize a candidate with less than two years of experience as a staff technician provided the individual completes a designated orientation and proctoring period of the supervisory role.
Other qualifications: Thorough knowledge of equipment used in respiratory therapy and pulmonary function services; drugs and medications used with respiratory therapy; accepted practices and procedures for cardiopulmonary emergencies; procedures and techniques for collecting pulmonary function tests.
Must Be Able To
Work harmoniously with medical staff and other hospital departments.
Plan, organize, and coordinate respiratory therapy activities with patient care plans per hospital policies.
Establish, conduct, and coordinate training programs for certification and registration that meet AMA and NBRC requirements.
Learn principles of personnel administration and application to assignment, supervision, and evaluation of staff.
Effectively supervise, issue orders, and maintain harmony and safety.
Effectively train and instruct others.
Be courteous, understanding, and tactful in dealings with patients, families, and medical staff.
Be familiar with organization functions, policies, regulations, and procedures related to respiratory therapy.
