
Director of Respiratory Therapy

The
Director of Respiratory Services
provides strategic leadership and clinical oversight for all respiratory care services within the Skilled Nursing Facility. This role ensures high-quality, patient-centered respiratory care while maintaining compliance with federal, state, and accrediting regulations. The Director is responsible for staff leadership, program development, quality outcomes, and collaboration with interdisciplinary teams to support medically complex residents.
Key Responsibilities Clinical Leadership & Oversight
Direct and evaluate all respiratory therapy services, including ventilator management, tracheostomy care, oxygen therapy, and pulmonary treatments
Establish and maintain evidence-based clinical protocols and standards of care
Participate in resident assessments, care planning, and interdisciplinary rounds
Recruit, train, schedule, and supervise respiratory therapy staff
Ensure staff competencies, certifications, and continuing education requirements are met
Provide coaching, performance evaluations, and corrective action when necessary
Regulatory Compliance & Quality Assurance
Ensure full compliance with CMS, state licensure, infection control, and life safety regulations
Prepare for and participate in regulatory surveys, audits, and inspections
Monitor clinical outcomes, quality indicators, and implement performance improvement initiatives Program & Operational Management
Develop and manage the respiratory services budget
Oversee equipment selection, utilization, maintenance, and vendor relationships
Collaborate with nursing, medical directors, rehabilitation, and pharmacy services to ensure coordinated care
Family & Physician Relations
Serve as a clinical resource for physicians, residents, and families regarding respiratory care
Communicate changes in condition, care plans, and clinical progress clearly and professionally
Required Qualifications
Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT)
credential (required)
Active state respiratory therapy license in good standing
Minimum
3–5 years of respiratory therapy experience , preferably in post-acute care, skilled nursing, LTACH, or critical care
Prior leadership or supervisory experience
strongly preferred
Demonstrated knowledge of ventilator-dependent and medically complex patient populations
Preferred Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree or higher in Respiratory Therapy, Healthcare Administration, or related field
Experience in a
ventilator-capable SNF or post-acute setting
Strong understanding of CMS regulations and quality reporting measures
Proven ability to lead teams and drive clinical excellence
Strong clinical judgment and decision-making
Excellent communication, leadership, and organizational skills
Ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary environment
