E&S Underwriting Manager

Bold Penguin’s wholesale E&S distribution arm is connecting agents to surplus lines capacity through a technology-enabled platform. We are adding an experienced E&S Underwriting Manager to build out a team to evaluate, underwrite, and bind commercial surplus lines risks. This role is a direct response to carrier partner demand for dedicated underwriting expertise within our wholesale operation, signaling the strategic importance of this hire to our growth trajectory.
Brief Description Initially, this role will serve as the underwriting point of contact for our E&S carrier partners, applying expertise in risk selection and pricing to drive profitable premium growth while maintaining strong carrier relationships. Over time you will be empowered to build out an underwriting team to place E&S business with our strategic carrier partners.
What You’ll Do
Evaluate, underwrite, and bind commercial E&S risks across multiple lines of business industries
Analyze submissions for risk acceptability, applying carrier-specific appetites, guidelines, and pricing models to drive informed underwriting decisions.
Manage the full underwriting lifecycle: submission intake, risk analysis, quote development, negotiation, binding, and policy issuance coordination.
Serve as the primary underwriting liaison with E&S carrier partners, ensuring alignment on risk appetite, pricing adequacy, and submission quality standards.
Be responsible for building out the underwriting and brokerage team to triage submissions, identify appropriate markets, and optimize placement strategy.
Develop and maintain rate adequacy analyses and loss-ratio tracking to ensure portfolio profitability across carrier partnerships
Identify coverage gaps and emerging risks in submitted business, recommending appropriate terms, conditions, and exclusions.
Contribute to the development of underwriting workflows, automated rules, and technology tools that improve throughput and decision quality on the Bold Penguin Exchange.
Monitor market trends, regulatory changes, and competitive dynamics in the E&S space to inform strategy and carrier conversations.
Requirements This is a fully remote role, with the exception of onboarding and optional in-office events.
5+ years of commercial E&S underwriting experience with a wholesale broker, MGA, or surplus lines carrier. Experience leading E&S underwriting team a plus
Demonstrated expertise underwriting surplus lines risks across multiple commercial lines (GL, property, professional, excess).
Deep understanding of surplus lines regulatory requirements, including stamping office procedures and diligent search obligations.
Proven ability to assess risk quality, develop pricing, and structure coverage terms independently.
Strong carrier relationships and experience managing binding authority or delegated underwriting agreements.
Active surplus lines license (or ability to obtain within 90 days of hire).
Excellent written and verbal communication skills with a track record of clear, defensible underwriting documentation.
Experience working within an insurtech, MGA, or technology-enabled wholesale brokerage environment.
Familiarity with API-driven quoting, digital submission workflows, or automated underwriting platforms
Experience with small-to-mid commercial E&S risks (under $50K premium) at volume.
Working knowledge of data-driven underwriting tools, predictive models, or third-party risk data integrations.
Physical Requirements
Must be able to sit/stand/walk for prolonged periods of time, (up to 8 hours per day) at a desk working on a computer.
Must be able to use standard office equipment for extended periods of time, including but not limited to, a mouse, keyboard, phone and video conferencing.
