Position Purpose The Assistant Director is responsible for managing the day-to-day operations of the Medical and Health Sciences Libraries, which include outreach and engagement, planning programs and services, and creating programs to support initiatives at the Geisel School of Medicine and Dartmouth Health. They manage, assess, and continuously improve the collections, information services, and library technology provided to Geisel, Dartmouth Health, and Dartmouth. They collaborate with the Director of Medical and Health Sciences Libraries on a strategic vision for the libraries in support of research, scholarship, education, and patient care in the health and life sciences.

Management and Leadership (60%)

Leads the collections, information services, and library technology teams of the Medical and Health Sciences Libraries.

Implements and evaluates core services based on the strategic goals of the Geisel School of Medicine, Dartmouth Libraries, Dartmouth Health, and Dartmouth.

Directs staff through collaborative leadership; conducts performance reviews, plans team activities, leads recruitment, mentors staff, and cultivates professional growth.

Coordinates outreach, marketing, the web presence, and core programs and services of the Medical and Health Sciences Libraries.

Develops and implements policies and procedures to meet the needs of key library stakeholders.

Works collaboratively with Geisel School of Medicine, Dartmouth Health, and Dartmouth Libraries colleagues to provide sustainable and coordinated services, access to resources, and consistency in policies.

Collaborates with the Director on managing the budget for collections, library technology, and information services.

Assumes responsibility for all library operations while acting as the Director’s designee during the Director’s absence.

Assessment (30%)

Collects, prepares, and analyzes statistics and reports to monitor key performance indicators against strategic goals and plans.

Designs and implements systematic assessment of library programs and services, gathering and analyzing usage data, performance metrics, and stakeholder feedback to evaluate impact and drive continuous improvement.

Partners with faculty, clinicians, researchers, students, and other stakeholders to understand their needs and apply that to the development of library programs and services.

Continuous Improvement and Innovation (10%)

Serves on and supports Geisel, Dartmouth Health, Dartmouth Libraries, and Dartmouth committees and initiatives as appropriate.

Represents Geisel and Dartmouth Libraries in relevant local, regional, and national organizations.

Keeps abreast of advances in health sciences, academic librarianship, program assessment, medical and health sciences research, and medical education.

Other Duties

Demonstrates professionalism and collegiality through actions, interactions, and communications with others appropriate to an environment that is welcoming to all.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

Master’s degree (or equivalent combination) with ALA-accredited master’s in library and/or information science, or an advanced subject or professional degree combined with relevant academic library experience.

Six years of professional librarian experience within an academic or health sciences library, including a minimum of three years of experience managing and developing staff.

Experience in a clinical or health sciences environment.

Preferred Qualifications

Three years of experience with collection development and/or budget management.
