Senior Content Designer, Language Systems, Human Interface Design

General Motors, Denver, CO, United States

Overview Build the systems that scale clear, consistent, human experiences. We are seeking people who define the standards, frameworks, and tools that help large organizations deliver clear, consistent, human‑centered language. Our Human Interface Design (HID) organization shapes how millions understand and interact with automotive technology across vehicle, app, web, and voice.

Within HID, the Language Systems team defines and maintains the content and communication foundations that keep our product language unified, accessible, and trustworthy. We develop guidance, guardrails, and systems that help designers work efficiently, and we assess and introduce tools and processes that raise the bar for quality and scale.

What we do:

Define and govern standards: We define language guidelines, best practices, terminology, and system‑wide content patterns that ensure cohesion across platforms.

Evaluate and integrate tools: We assess emerging tools (examples: content QA, terminology management, AI assistants, Figma plugins) and implement them across workflows.

Document the system: We translate complex decisions into clear, comprehensive documentation that teams can rely on.

Build scalable models: We create governance structures that support consistent decision‑making across products, teams, and surfaces.

Enable content designers: We provide guidance, tools, and processes that help writers work faster and more confidently.

Partner across the ecosystem: We collaborate with design, product, engineering, and research to keep language clear, accurate, and aligned.

Why join us:

Influence at scale: Your decisions will shape clarity and coherence across GM’s digital and in‑vehicle ecosystem.

Lead critical systems: Define the operating model for language quality and governance.

Advance AI for content: Evaluate, pilot, and integrate next‑generation content tools into production workflows.

Drive clarity and alignment: Guide cross‑functional teams toward consistent language and decision‑making.

If you’re excited to build the language systems infrastructure that powers world‑class experiences, we’d love to meet you.

Job description General Motors is seeking a Senior Content Designer, Language Systems to establish and scale the standards, tools, and processes that support consistent, high‑quality content across HID. You will set communication standards, establish frameworks and processes, and lead the creation and implementation of a governance model that promotes quality content across experiences.

Responsibilities

Build and evolve governance models—including workflows, decision frameworks, review practices, and change‑management processes—that scale content quality across teams.

Evaluate, pilot, and operationalize AI‑enabled content tools like linting engines, terminology platforms, writing assistants, and evaluation tools to improve consistency and efficiency.

Establish criteria and assessment methods for tool selection, ensuring solutions align with HID workflows, design systems, and content quality goals.

Create clear, authoritative documentation—standards, playbooks, patterns, system guides, and reference materials—to support large‑scale adoption.

Collaborate with the design system team to embed language foundations into components, patterns, and UI guidance.

Write and refine content directly in Figma to validate standards against real flows, wires, and UI constructs.

Partner with mobile, web, and vehicle content designers to ensure terminology and patterns remain aligned across connected journeys.

Lead working sessions, audits, and reviews to enforce governance practices and ensure consistency across teams and platforms.

Lead the HID studio in systems thinking, tool adoption, and decision‑making related to language quality and governance.

Advocate for clarity, consistency, and system integrity across product and design partners.

Minimum qualifications

A portfolio demonstrating systems thinking, content design maturity, standards creation, and successful integration of technology and tools in content processes.

Strong technical proficiency in Figma, components, plugins, and variables.

Strong sense of ownership and ability to create structure in ambiguous environments.

Experience shaping governance models, playbooks, or tool strategies for content systems.

Deep understanding of human interface design principles and how language contributes to usability.

Strong UX writing instincts with a preference for precision, clarity, and minimalism.

High comfort level with technical concepts; ability to understand engineering and product terminology quickly.

Experience with content quality or AI‑enabled tools (preferred: Ditto, Acrolinx, Markup AI).

Expertise in information architecture, taxonomy, and structuring complex content systems.

Confident presenter capable of driving alignment with executive stakeholders.

Collaborative, kind teammate who contributes to a positive, supportive team culture.

Experience developing standards and governance documentation.

Additional strengths

Background evaluating AI/ML models, language‑based tooling, or rule‑based quality systems.

Experience with multi‑modal or non‑traditional interfaces (vehicle, voice, embedded systems).

Familiarity with content operations and large‑scale documentation systems.
